Baseball Completes Three-Game Series Sweep of King's

The Ducks push their winning streak to six and are now 4-2 in MAC Freedom play

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (March 20, 2023) – Senior Ben Tobio recorded an RBI on four hits and scored a run as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated King's College 5-3 in MAC Freedom play Monday afternoon at Lipo Field.

The Ducks (12-5) won their sixth straight game and concluded a three-game series with King's. The Ducks are now 4-2 in MAC Freedom play and sit fourth in the standings.

Justin Richards recorded a hit and two RBI to lead the Monarchs, who fell to 6-7 and 1-5 in conference play. King's has still never beaten the Ducks as Stevens improved to 9-0 all-time in the series.

The Ducks jumped on King's from the start, building off of their momentum of winning twice over the Monarchs on Saturday in Hoboken. Tobio hit a leadoff single to get things started in the top of the first for the Ducks. After a pop-up, senior Michael Reyes singled which pushed Tobio to third. Junior Christian Kreiser, who was named the MAC Freedom Player of the Week earlier in the day, added another RBI to his season total by singling to right to score Tobio. Kreiser has now recorded at least one RBI in four of the last five games. Senior Chris Davis had a two-run single later in the inning which scored Reyes and Krieser to put the Ducks up 3-0.

The Monarchs were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the first, scoring one run. Zach Day lined out to left fielder but scored Nick Cizak to put King's within two.

King's scored twice more in the bottom of the third to tie the game and force senior Mark DeCicco out of the game. He pitched 2.2 innings in the starting role, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out three while also walking three.

The two teams combined for seven hits between innings four and seven, but neither team was able to drive in a run as they remained tied entering the top of the eighth.

With one out already in the inning, sophomore Zachary Boykin entered the game as a pinch-hitter and singled. Sophomore Evan Pravato laid a sacrifice bunt to move Boykin to second. Still with one out, first-year Dylan Fishbough pushed a double down the left field line to score Boykin and put the Ducks back in front. Tobio followed that up with a single to score Fishbough with a key insurance run.

Senior Anthony Pron (1-0) came in for relief after the flurry of runs in the eighth and did not disappoint. The right-handed pitcher faced ten batters, striking out six and only allowing one hit as he earned his first first win of the season and the 11th of his career.

First-year Erik Sibbach also pitched well in relief, giving the Ducks 3 1-3 innings out of the bullpen. He also struck out six Monarchs and allowed just three hits.

Josh Kilvitis (1-1) pitched two innings of relief for King's, allowing two runs on four hits. Matt Masala started for the Monarchs and pitched seven innings. He gave up ten hits and three runs. The right-hander also struck out three batters and surrendered three walks.

Up Next: Baseball returns to Hoboken on Wednesday, March 22, as they host the College of Mount St. Vincent in non-conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Ducks are 7-3 all-time against the Dolphins. Links for live stats and video are posted to StevensDucks.com.
