Westerby Scores 100th Career Goal; No. 25 Women's Lacrosse Falters at No. 10 York

The loss is the Ducks' first of the season

YORK, Pa. (March 22, 2023) – Fifth-year Morgan Westerby scored her 100th career goal and fellow classmate Camryn Rogers recorded her sixth straight hat trick but it was not enough as No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse lost to No. 10 York College of Pennsylvania 20-8 Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup at Kinsley Field.

The setback is the Ducks' first of the season as they fell to 7-1.

Kiersten Blanchard led the way for York (4-2), scoring five goals and adding three assists. Gianna Huet and Sydney Mentzer each added four points for the Spartans. York improves to 3-1 all-time against Stevens and is now 1-2 against ranked teams this season.

Senior Julieann Murphy tallied two points in defeat for the Ducks. She scored one and provided an assist. Five Ducks recorded a point as Westerby, senior Maddie Schmidt, junior Emily Leiby and sophomore Emily Smart had one goal each. First-year Stefanie Sellitto tallied one assist.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made four saves in just over 20 minutes of action. First-year Felicity Heilferty played just over 19 minutes and made three saves. First-year Emma Guzowski also made one save in the game. Bella Garabo made four saves in a winning effort for York. McKenna Seashole came on in relief at the start of the fourth quarter and stopped three shots.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first 76 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Blanchard then scored her first with 11:49 to go in the quarter as York possessed a 3-0 lead. The Ducks were finally able to break through via Murphy's eighth of the season to trim the deficit just over a minute later. After York added a fourth, the Ducks scored from a free-position attempt on a player advantage from Westerby to pull back within two. The Spartans would add two more in the final five minutes as they held a 6-2 lead after the first.

The two teams separated in the second quarter as the Spartans held Stevens scoreless in the frame. York scored eight times to possess a 14-2 lead at the half. This was only the second time this season the Ducks trailed at the break. Blanchard and Mentzer each scored twice in the second frame.

Out of the halftime break, it was the Ducks who were able to string a few goals together to get themselves going. Rogers scored her 31st and 32nd goals of the season within the first six minutes of the period to cut the York lead to ten. The Spartans would later answer with two of their own. Schmidt reached double digit scoring with her tenth of the season with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter. The Spartans struck twice more in the final two minutes of the third as they held a 18-5 lead going into the fourth.

York obtained its biggest lead of the game with 12:12 to go as they led 19-5. Leiby was able to score and get the goal back for the Ducks, but York answered quickly to push their lead back to 14. Stevens found goals from Rogers and Smart late in the fourth as the Ducks dropped their first game of the year.

Stevens scored on one of its two free-position shots. Westerby's goal in the first was the lone conversion for the Ducks. York went two for five.

The Spartans held a 15 to 13 advantage on draw controls in the contest. Sellitto led the Ducks with four. Rogers and Westerby each added three. Blanchard and Mentzer each totaled three for York.

The Ducks corralled a total of 12 ground balls in the contest. Westerby led the way with three while three other Ducks recorded two. Garabo totaled four for the Spartans to lead the way.

Stevens caused three of York's seven turnovers. First-year Maggie Zarish-Yasunas led the team with two while Westerby added one. The Spartans caused ten of the 17 Duck turnovers, with Mentzer leading the way with three.

The Ducks went a solid 11 for 14 on clears. The Spartans were nearly perfect as they went 17 for 18.
