Women's Lacrosse Opens Mac Freedom Play With a Win Over FDU-Florham

The Ducks also improve to 8-1 on the season.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 29, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers scored four goals and added an assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse defeated FDU-Florham 19-8 Wednesday night in a MAC Freedom matchup at DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The game was the first conference match for the Ducks this season, as they started MAC Freedom play 1-0 and improved to 8-1 overall. The Ducks also had a season-low four turnovers in the contest.

Marissa Ross and Lizzy Escudero each tallied three points for FDU-Florham as they each scored two goals and had an assist. The Devils fall to 0-1 in conference play and 2-7 overall. Stevens has now won two straight games over FDU-Florham.

Senior Julieann Murphy also scored four goals for the Ducks. Fifth-year Morgan Westerby added three goals for Stevens. Sophomores Alison Lax and Emily Smart each contributed two goals and one assist each while junior Emily Leiby added two goals. Senior Zoe Cook and sophomore Rebecca Guerra each tallied on goal for the Ducks.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made seven saves in just under 40 minutes of action. First-year Felicity Heilferty played 20:33. Alison Kozik made ten saves in a losing effort for FDU-Florham.

Stevens scored three goals in the first five minutes of play to open up a 3-0 lead on their conference foe. Lax, Murphy, and Smart all scored unassisted for the Ducks. With 8:29 to go in the first, Cook converted a free position attempt to push the Duck lead to four. Stevens would continue to apply pressure as Murphy scored the next two before FDU-Florham finally got on the board. The Ducks would later go on a quick three-goal spurt in just under a minute and a half, as Rogers scored once and Westerby scored twice to give the Ducks a 9-1 advantage with 2:32 remaining in the quarter. The Devils were able to get one goal back in the final minute of the quarter.

Neither team was able to score for the first eight minutes of the second frame until Rogers scored her second of the game with 7:49 remaining in the quarter. That goal sparked more goals, as Leiby, Rogers, and Westerby were all able to get on the scoresheet over the next four minutes to give the Ducks a 13-2 lead. The score would remain at halftime.

FDU-Florham scored the first two goals of the third quarter which forced a timeout from Stevens. Following the break, the Ducks held the Devils scoreless for the final 9:38 of the third quarter. Murphy was able to score another goal with 9:06 remaining, this time on an assist from Rogers. Smart scored her sixth of the season after a pretty juke to set up the finish which put Stevens up by 11. Rogers would add another in the final minute to give the Ducks a 16-4 edge heading to the fourth.

Stevens continued to take it to the visitors to start the fourth frame as Guerra scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Smart. Leiby and Lax would also score goals as Stevens held a 15 goal lead with 7:42 left in the game. FDU-Florham was able to score the final four goals of the game across the final five minutes, but it wasn't enough as the Ducks once again came out victorious.

Stevens scored on five of its six free-position shots. Rogers went a perfect three-for-three while Westerby and Cook each converted as well. FDU-Florham did not score on any of their three free-position attempts.

The Ducks held a 20 to 10 advantage on draw controls in the contest. Rogers led the team with nine and Westerby had six. First-year Stefanie Sellitto also had two. Three FDU-Florham players recorded three.

The Ducks corralled a total of 15 ground balls in the contest. Fifth-year Josie Cook led the way with three. Westerby, sophomore Marie Lindberger, and first-year Lauren Sullivan each had two. Julianna Medina had two to lead the Devils.

Stevens caused just one of the nine FDU-Florham turnovers, as Josie Cook was the one who caused it. FDU-Florham caused just one of the four Duck turnovers.

The Ducks went a solid 13 for 14 on clears. The Devils also executed clears well as they went eight for 12.
