CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 1, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers scored four goals and added two assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse defeated DeSales 20-3 Saturday afternoon in a MAC Freedom matchup at DeSales' Turf Fields.
The Ducks improve to 9-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. Stevens also improves to an impressive 4-1 on the road.
DeSales (3-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) was only able to muster three goals in the game, which matches their least in a match this season. Dani Towey, Meagan Landers, and Marina Bradley each scored for the Bulldogs.
With her six points today, Rodgers is now one shy of 200 for her career as she sits on 199. Fifth-year Morgan Westerby and senior Zoe Cook each recorded four points for the Ducks. Junior Carly Walker and sophomore Emily Smart each had three. Seniors Julieann Murphy and Maddie Schmidt, junior Emily Leiby, sophomores Anna Velardi and Rebecca Guerra, as well as first-year Stefanie Sellitto each provided two points for the Ducks. Sophomore Alison Lax and first-year Bella Mangano each had one point.
Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made one save in 15 minutes of action. First-year Felicity Heilferty played the second quarter and made two saves. Sophomore Erica Strojny played the third quarter and did not allow a goal. First-year Emma Guzowski saw action in the fourth. Michaela Regan made three saves in a losing effort for DeSales.
Stevens gave DeSales no chance to settle into the game as they came out firing. The Ducks were able to tally ten goals in total in the first quarter. Schmidt got things started on an assist from Smart to put the Ducks on the board. Smart then had another assist to Sellitto with 13:03 to go. The Ducks next two goals came from Cook and Rodgers, with Rodgers providing the assist on the Cook goal. Westerby scored her 22nd of the season on an assist from Schmidt with 8:21. With 6:31 left to play, Rogers was able to convert a free-position shot to put Stevens up 7-0. Leiby, Westerby, and Cook rounded out the scoring for the Ducks in the quarter.
After not scoring in the first, DeSales scored the first two goals of the second quarter to trim the Duck lead down to eight. Stevens was held scoreless for just under five minutes, as Westerby got the Ducks going in the second at the 10:06 mark. A few minutes later Rogers scored her 40th and 41st goals of the season to push the lead to 11. Sellitto also scored another goal in the second, with her goal assisted by sophomore Anna Velardi. Westerby tallied another in the final minute with a player advantage as the Ducks led 15-2 heading into the break.
Stevens continued to pour it on against a DeSales team who was only able to muster three goals in total on the afternoon. Leiby scored less than a minute into the quarter on an assist from Walker. Mangano scored her second goal of the season a few minutes later on a pass from Murphy. Cook and Guerra also scored in the frame as the Ducks maintained a 19-2 advantage heading into the fourth.
DeSales scored less than two minutes into the fourth quarter to score their third goal of the game. The Ducks tallied one more goal in the quarter from Velardi at the 6:28 mark as the Ducks claimed another road victory.
Stevens both of its free-position shots. Rogers and Cook each converted for the visitors. DeSales also went two-for-two on free-position attempts.
The Ducks held a 19 to six advantage on draw controls in the contest. Westerby and first-year Lauren Sullivan led the team with five while Sellitto had three. Cook also had two while Rogers and Murphy had one. Haley Petrosini recorded three for DeSales.
The Ducks corralled a total of 12 ground balls in the contest. Sullivan and Walker led the team with two. Eight other Ducks recorded one. DeSales had eight ground balls and Petrosini led the team with three.
Stevens caused seven of the 17 DeSales turnovers. Sullivan and first-year Lindsay Esposito led the Ducks with two. Leiby, Cunniff, and Lax each had one. DeSales caused three of the 13 Duck turnovers.
Stevens went a perfect 11 for 11 on clears. The Bulldogs also executed clears well as they went 11 for 16.
