MADISON, N.J. (March 29, 2023) – Sophomore Blake Creamer scored a career high five goals and added an assist as No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse blew out FDU-Florham 28-10 Wednesday night in a MAC Freedom contest at Robert T. Shields Stadium
The 28 goals scored by the Ducks is the new program record for goals scored in a game. The previous record was 27 and was set back on April 27, 2005.
"Good to play every healthy player and all five goalies today," said head coach Gene Peluso. "I was happy with the early start. FDU played hard and a lot of our young players got some valuable minutes tonight so that was a great thing."
The Ducks had a season high 20 players record a point in the outing. Graduate Kevin Crowley and first-year Matthew Pergola each recorded five points. Senior Trevor Carroll had a career high four points while seniors Jake Wright and Shaun Spiegel each added a season high four points. First-year Miles Dubois also had a career high in points as he had three. Senior Jack Phelan had a career high two points while graduate Henry Johnson, senior Joseph Cawley, sophomore Shea Grant, sophomore Tommy Robertozzi also added two points. First-year Danny Winkler recorded his first career point while junior Keegan Hughes, sophomore Jack Ramos, sophomore Thomas Sabatino, and first-year Joe Leone each tallied one point.
"We were impressed with goalie play from Quinn Smith," Peluso said. "Obviously getting good scoring from a lot of our guys like Blake Creamer, Shaun Spiegel, Trevor Carroll, Thomas Robertozzi and Jack Phelan. Also happy for Dan Winkler to get his first career goal!"
Brenden Fabin led the way for FDU-Florham (4-6, 0-1 MAC Freedom) as he scored four goals and added an assist. Stevens improves to 8-2 and 1-0 in conference play. They also improved to 7-0 all-time against the Devils.
Graduate Ryan Leahy only played 7:35 and was not forced to make any saves. Sophomore Cooper Foote played the next 15 minutes and made one save. Junior Jake Zeyher saw 7:25 of game action and made one save. Sophomore Justin Gold played the whole third quarter and also added a save. Sophomore Quinton Smith played the entire fourth quarter and made three saves. Matt Reifer played all 60 minutes for the Devils and he made ten saves on the night.
Stevens scored the first goal of the game at the 12:05 mark to open the scoring. The goal was scored by Grant. The Ducks then proceeded to win the faceoff and score and did so three straight times as they extended their lead to four. They would end up scoring a total of ten in the quarter and not allowing one for the Devils as they led 10-0 after one. Creamer scored a goal with two seconds to go in the frame on an assist from Crowley.
Leone scored the first goal of the second quarter early which extended the Duck lead to 11. FDU-Florham finally got on the board with 12:17 left to go in the half. After another Creamer goal with 10:05 left, FDU-Florham scored the next two goals to cut the Stevens lead to single digits. That wouldn't face the visitors as they were able to score four goals with a man-advantage across a minute and a half of play to push their lead to 13. The Devils scored with 4:45 to go and neither team scored after that as the Ducks led 16-4 at the break.
FDU-Florham scored the first three goals coming out of the break to once again cut the deficit to single digits. The Ducks were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of play in the second half. Du Bois finally ended the drought with 6:52 to go on an assist from Carroll. After each team scored one, the Ducks rattled off three straight goals off of faceoff wins in the final two minutes to extend their advantage to 21-8 heading into the fourth.
Spiegel scored a man down with 13:50 left in the game to put the Ducks up 14. Later up 26-10, Phelan was able to find the back of the net on an assist from Du Bois to match the program record for goals in a game. Winkler then scored his first career goal to break the record with 1:46 to go as the Ducks were victorious once again over the Devils.
The Ducks caused 14 of the 30 FDU-Florham turnovers. Du Bois, Cawley, and graduate Carter Haskell each had two. Eight other Ducks recorded one. The Devils caused 11 of the 25 Duck turnovers.
Sophomore Andrew Muller won 10 of the 30 faceoffs the Ducks won on the night. Junior Connor Park and first-year Will Giarusso each won seven. Sophomore Bryan Creamer won six. FDU-Florham won a total of 11 faceoffs on the evening.
The Ducks went four for two on the man advantage, as they scored all four in the two minute span in the second quarter. The Devils were one for six with the extra man.
Stevens picked up 50 ground balls in the game while FDU-Florham only had 27. Bryan Creamer and Cawley each led the way with six.
"We now dial into a strong DeSales team who have been playing good lacrosse," finished Peluso.
Up Next: No. 20 Men's Lacrosse returns to action on Sunday, April 2, as they continue MAC Freedom play when they host DeSales. The contest was originally scheduled for April 1.
