Camryn Rogers scored five goals and classmate
Morgan Westerby totaled four points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team held off Rowan 12-11 Saturday afternoon at the Rowan Lacrosse and Soccer Complex.
In a close battle, the lead changed five times, but the Ducks (3-0) were able to edge out Rowan for a second consecutive season.
Sophomore

Anna Velardi and senior
Maddie Schmidt each scored once for the Ducks. Senior
Julieann Murphy tallied an assist.
Graduate student Lauren Carniff drew the start in the cage and made eleven saves to earn the victory. She also caused one turnover and grabbed two ground balls. Reilly Shaup stopped seven shots in defeat for Rowan.
Smart kicked things off, scoring an unassisted goal with 12:27 left in the first to put the Ducks in front. Rowan answered with two goals from Trish Gillen in thirty-seven seconds to give the Profs (2-1) their first lead of the game. Gillen finished with a team-high five points.
Rogers scored her first of the day to tie things up at three. Schmidt scored less than a minute later to put the Ducks back in front. The Profs would tack on one more goal in the quarter to tie things up at three heading into the second.Â
Rogers would end up doing most of her damage in the second quarter. She netted three goals in just over four minutes. However, the Profs scored five times in the quarter to maintain an 8-7 lead heading into the break. Westerby also had a second-quarter goal for Stevens.
Despite trailing at the break, it was Stevens who gained momentum in the third quarter, scoring three times, while holding Rowan scoreless in the frame. Westerby scored twice unassisted and provided the helper for Rogers' final goal of the contest.Â
Stevens possessed their largest lead of the game with 12:47 left in the fourth as Velardi scored to put the Ducks up three. Rowan got the goal back three minutes later on a shot from Elaina Corson. The Profs then proceeded to trim the Ducks' lead to just a single goal after Erin Renshaw with just under six minutes left in regulation.Â
However, Stevens halted the Rowan comeback attempt on a Smart goal with just under three minutes to go to push the lead back to two. Rowan was able to score with 47 seconds left, but Rogers corralled the ensuing draw control, and the Ducks ran out the clock to remain undefeated on the young season.
The Ducks scored on all three of their free-position shots. Rogers converted both of her eight-meter opportunities in the second quarter, while Westerby added one in the third. Rowan went 2 for 6 on free-position shots.
Stevens finished with a slight 14-13 advantage on draw controls. Rogers and Westerby each had four. First-year Stephanie Sellitto and senior
Zoe Cook each tallied two for the Ducks. Molly Green had six to pace Rowan.
Stevens caused seven of Rowan's 15 turnovers. First-year
Lindsay Esposito anchored the Ducks' defensive effort with three caused turnovers while first-year
Lauren Sullivan caused two. Rowan caused nine of the Ducks' 17 turnovers, with Erin Scioli registering three caused turnovers.
Both teams did well on clears with the Ducks finishing 17 of 21 and the Profs going 12 of 14.
