No. 24 Women's Lacrosse Dethrones King's

The Ducks have only allowed five goals across their last four games.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 15, 2023) – Senior Zoe Cook scored four goals while five other Ducks tallied three points as the No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated King's (PA) 20-1 Saturday morning in a MAC Freedom matchup at McCarthy Stadium.

The Ducks improve to 12-1 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. Stevens also improved to a solid 6-1 in games played outside of Hoboken this season. The Ducks have only allowed five goals across their last four games and a total of 13 in conference games.

King's (2-10, 1-3 MAC Freedom) were held to a season-low goal total, as they were only to put one in the back of the net. Their previous season-low was three, which came against Marymount University on February 23rd. The Monarchs have now lost three straight.

Senior's Camryn Rogers, Julieann Murphy and Maddie Schmidt, along with sophomores Alison Lax and Rebecca Guerra, all had three points in the game. Rogers, Schmidt, and Guerra each had two goals and an assist. Murphy had a goal and an assist while Lax had three assists. Sophomore Emily Smart and first-year Stefanie Sellitto each had one goal and one assist. Junior Emily Leiby, sophomore Anna Velardi, and first-year Maddie Hogan each tallied two goals. First-years Hana Yang and Maggie Zarish-Yasunas each had one point, with Zarish-Yasunas scoring and Yang providing an assist.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and saw 15 minutes of action to earn her 12th win of the season. First-year Felicity Heilferty, sophomore Erica Strojny, and first-year Emma Guzowski also each played 15 minutes. Strojny made one save.

Stevens jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage after the first 3:08 of the game. Zoe Cook scored her first of the game on the quick spurt while Schmidt had a goal and an assist. The Ducks added another goal before the ten minute mark thanks to Sellitto, which was followed by Leiby less than a minute later. In total, the Ducks scored 11 goals in the quarter and led 11-0 at the conclusion of the first. Rogers scored twice in the final four minutes of the first.

The Ducks slowed things down a little bit, only scoring three goals in the second as they possessed a 14-0 lead at the break. Schmidt scored from a free-position attempt at the 12:04 mark. Less than three minutes later, Sellitto scored her second of the morning. Zoe Cook also scored in the frame. Through two quarters, King's had just one shot and zero on target.

Coming out of the break, Stevens wasted no time as Guerra scored on an assist from Rogers less than two minutes into the quarter. Things settled down after that, and the Ducks did not score for the next seven minutes. Zarish-Yasunas cashed in with 6:42 left in the frame to put the Ducks up 16-0. Ashley Davis finally got the Monarchs on the scoresheet as she scored unassisted with 2:50 to play in the third. Hogan scored with under a minute left on an assist from Murphy to give the Ducks a 17-1 advantage going into the fourth.

With the game already in hand, the Ducks added on three more goals for a final tally of 20 for the game. Guerra scored with 7:03 to go, and Hogna and Velardi tacked on the other goals later on in the quarter. For the day, King's was held to just four shots.

Stevens went three for four on free-position shots. Zoe Cook, Schmidt, and Velardi converted for the Ducks. King's had no free-position attempts.

The Ducks held a 21 to one advantage on draw controls in the contest. Rogers led the team with seven while Sellitto added six. Zoe Cook also had three in the game. Leiby added two.

Stevens corralled a total of 17 ground balls in the contest. Velardi led the team with three. Sellitto, Lax, Smart, and fifth-year Josie Cook each had two. Six other Ducks recorded one.

Stevens caused six of the 14 King's turnovers. Leiby led the team with two. Four other Ducks recorded one. The Monarchs only caused three of the eight Stevens turnovers.

Stevens went a perfect eight for eight on clears. The Monarchs went 50 percent on clears, going eight for 16.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse returns home as they host Cabrini on Wednesday, April 19, to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule. The game is set for 7 p.m. Stevens is 4-2 all-time against Cabrini. The contest will be a Mental Health Awareness Game. Links for live stats and video are posted to StevensDucks.com.
