Roger That! No. 24 Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Cabrini 11-8

Rogers score four times as Ducks win sixth straight

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 19, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers capped a four-goal night by scoring with a little under 90 seconds left in regulation as No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse defeated Cabrini University 11-8 Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Zoe Cook matched Rogers with four goals and sophomore Emily Smart dished out a career-high five assists as the Ducks won their sixth straight to improve to 13-1.

One of the nation's leading scorers, Olivia Little, had three goals to lead Cabrini, who saw its five-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 9-5. Little entered play averaging 6.29 points per game, but the Ducks held her to just three, matching a season low. The Ducks have won the last five meetings between the programs, although Wednesday night's matchup was the first in Hoboken since 2010.

Senior Julieann Murphy finished with two goals and a pair of assists for the Ducks, who saw six different players find the scoresheet. First-year Stefanie Sellitto netted her 13th of the season and senior Maddie Schmidt recorded her seventh assist to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions. Schmidt's helper on Sellitto's first-quarter goal extended her point streak to three.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff played all 60 minutes for just the fifth time this season and made 11 saves for her fourth game with 10 or more stops this season. Abbey Fenton stopped seven shots in a losing effort for Cabrini. Each goalie took turns shutting down the opposing offenses. Cunniff made a game-high five saves in the second period, holding the Cavaliers to two goals on eight shots. In the fourth, it was Fenton's turn as the Cabrini netminder made four saves on seven Stevens shots, holding the Ducks to a single goal. The teams combined for 55 shots, with Cabrini holding a 30-25 advantage, as the Ducks were outshot for just the fourth time this season.

After Maggie Cella scored off a free-position shot to put the guests on the board first, the Ducks scored on six of their first eight shots to take control of the game. Cook netted her first of the game just 30 seconds after Cella's game-opening goal. Goals from Rogers and Murphy followed before Cook found the back of the net for the second time to give the Ducks a three-goal advantage. Cook has scored at least one goal in each of her last six contests.

Murphy followed with her second of the game with Sellitto's marker closing out the Ducks' scoring run.

Little scored on the woman-advantage to open second-quarter scoring. Rogers broke through with her second of the evening to push the lead back to five. Rogers has scored at least one goal in all 14 games this season.

Little netted her second of the period to send the teams into the intermission with Stevens holding a four-goal, however the Ducks came out of halftime with Rogers completing her 12th hat trick of the year. Cook netted a pair of goals to bookend a tally by Olivia Pace to push the lead back to six. Cella beat the thrid-quarter buzzer with her second of the game to spark a run of four unanswered goals to pull the guests within two with just over eight minutes left in regulation. However, after a Stevens timeout, junior Emily Leiby grabbed the ensuing draw control to secure the biggest possession of the evening.

The Ducks' defense prevented Cabrini from getting any closer. The Ducks drew a yellow card on Little to force a turnover and Cunniff made her final save of the night on Shea Neary to preserve the two-goal lead. After another timeout, the Ducks, ranked first in the country in clearing percentage, successfully cleared the ball, which led to Rogers' final goal of the evening; one that effectively ended any hopes Cabrini had of forcing extra time. Leiby was able to keep possession with the Ducks on the next draw control and the Ducks were able to run out the clock to secure the victory.

Stevens finished the night with a 14-9 advantage in draw controls, including a 4-1 edge in the crucial final period, which saw Leiby earn two pivotal draws down the stretch. Cook and Rogers each had six to pace the Ducks, while Neary had four to lead Cabrini.

The game ended with Stevens finding success on 21 of its 24 clearing attempts, although the Ducks were a perfect 6 for 6 in the first quarter as they grew their lead and 4 for 4 in the final quarter closing out the game. Cabrini finished 21 of 26.

Two of Little's three goals came on eight-meter shots as Cabrini finished the night 3 of 6 on free-position shots. Conversely, the Ducks went 0 for 2, failing to convert on free-position shots for just the second time this season.

Five different Ducks forced a turnover as Cabrini coughed up the ball 17 times. Although first-year Lindsay Esposito didn't register a caused turnover, the Mountain Lakes, New Jersey native did scoop up a career-high four ground balls.

Up Next: No. 24 Women's Lacrosse resumes MAC Freedom play on April 22 with a tilt with Lycoming College at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. Stevens' head women's lacrosse coach Karen Shaddock spent two seasons at Lycoming, amassing a 22-12 record. Prior to the game, the Ducks will recognize their Class of 2023 in a Senior Day ceremony.
