MADISON, N.J. (April 18, 2023) – Graduate student Siobhan Cottell recorded two hits on a lackluster day for the Ducks as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team was swept by Drew University, 8-0 (F/6) and 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at the Drew Softball Complex.
The two hits from Cottell lead the Ducks (13-17) on the day. The team only totaled six hits across the two games. Sophomore Megan Curtis added a hit and a run scored in the second game. Drew (20-11 is now 3-0 against MAC foes this season (Delaware Valley) and has won seven of their last nine games.
"The losses are tough, there is no denying that," head coach Emily Kaczmarek said. "We have got to keep the faith and weather the storm together because there's plenty of opportunity left for us to accomplish what we want to. It is not about how you start, it only matters how you finish and we 100% have an opportunity to finish strong."
Drew got off to a good start by scoring three runs in the first inning. Molly O'Brien, who had three hits in the game, hit a triple to bring home two of the three runs.
After sophomore Madison Subbiondo was hit by a pitch, Cottell hit a double to put two runners in scoring position in the top of the second. The Ducks then had a batter strike out followed by senior Alex Schoellig walking. With the bases loaded and one out, the Ducks struck out twice in a row to end the inning.
Stevens once again loaded the bases in the third inning but again, were unable to get anything out of it. The Rangers scored in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to four on a home run from O'Brien.
Drew scored three more runs in the fifth inning to open up a 7-0 lead. Two of the runs were unearned as the Ducks committed two errors in the inning. The Rangers would add another run in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead, which ended the game early.
First-year Ella Tozduman (7-6) earned the start but only lasted one inning. She allowed three runs on three hits. Fellow classmate Ashley Allen pitched the remaining 4.1 innings. She gave up five runs on three hits.
Bailey Comeau (9-3) pitched the whole game for the Rangers. She only gave up four hits and struck out seven batters.
The second game started out slow, as the two teams combined for just two hits across the first two innings. The Ducks finally got on the board for the first time as they scored twice in the top of the third. Senior Elise Fauske drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Curtis then hit a single which pushed Fauske to third. Curtis then stole second. While Curtis stole, the Drew catcher had a throwing error, which allowed Fauske to score. Curtis also was able to score on the play as she made her way from first to home without being advanced by a hit. The Ducks led 2-0.
The Rangers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning as they cut the deficit in half. Deja Robinson had an RBI single for the home side.
Drew scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead and would see that lead out as they swept the Ducks. After the third inning, the Ducks did not have another base runner in the game.
Senior Erin Kreis (3-10) pitched six innings for the Ducks as she earned the start in game two. She gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits. She also struck out five batters.
Teagan Bradley (5-5) earned the start for Drew in the second game. She pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs on two hits. She struck out seven batters and walked one.
