Four-Run Sixth Sends DeSales Over Baseball 10-2

Ducks fall into play-in game after setback to DeSales

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 28, 2023) – Sophomore Victor Schilleci and senior Chris Davis each had two hits, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to DeSales University 10-2 Friday in a MAC Freedom game at Dobbelaar Field.

Senior Michael Reyes had an RBI double for the Ducks, who dropped their third straight to fall to 25-14 on the year and to 14-10 in conference play. The setback dropped the Ducks into fourth place in the conference standings. The Ducks will play in the MAC Freedom's "Play-In game to advance to next weekend's postseason tournament. The game is currently scheduled for Tuesday with a time and opponent to be announced, but weather is threating the entire weekend schedule, which includes the final games between Arcadia and Misericordia and Arcadia and Lycoming, that will ultimately determine the final regular season standings.

Justin DeStaso homered and Gavin Zavorski had a bases-clearing triple for DeSales, who won its third straight to improve to 22-17 on the year and to 15-9 in the MAC Freedom. The Bulldogs, who have won four of the last five meetings between the teams, are now locked into the third seed in the postseason.

DeSales jumped on the board in the first against senior Justin Doyle (5-5). J.T. Anderosky and Gabe Diaz singled. After a fielder's choice, Billy Scanlon grounded Doyle's 2-2 offering to third, easily scoring Anderosky with the first run of the game.

The Ducks responded with a pair of runs off Alex Chase (4-1). Junior Jack Stafford reached on a two-base throwing error by Diaz. Three pitches later, Reyes drove a ball off the center field wall to score the Ducks' leadoff hitter. Reyes moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on junior Christian Kreiser's grounder to first. The two runs snapped an 11-inning scoreless streak. Chase allowed two runs on three hits across five innings, while striking out five.

Doyle kept the Bulldog bats at bay, allowing just two hits over the next three innings until DeStaso broke the stretch with a blast that just cleared the centerfield wall to tie the game. The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the sixth on a fielding error to chase Doyle. The Ducks' right-hander finished the day allowing five runs with just two earned, over 5 2-3 innings. Doyle struck out four.

Senior Anthony Pron took over for Doyle and was greeted by a seeing-eye single before Anderosky doubled into the gap in right center to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead. All four runs that crossed the plate in the sixth were unearned.

DeSales added a single run in the eighth and three more in ninth to break the game open. Zavorski had the big blow, tripling to deep center. Reyes seemed to limit the damage with a well-placed throw to third. Davis appeared to apply the tag at third that would have ended the inning and disallowed the third run, however, after some discussion between the umpires, it was determined that the tag was not successfully applied.

The Ducks threated against Will Manley in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Eli Somers singled to lead off the inning. Stafford reached on an infield single to force a pitching change. J.J. Paul induced a groundout to put both runners in scoring position, but Paul struck out the final two batters to end the game.

Up Next: Baseball heads to Patchogue, Long Island for a non-conference contest at St. Joseph's College (L.I.) in the regular season finale. Formerly regular opponents in the Skyline Conference, the Golden Eagles defeated the Ducks 2-0 last May in the NCAA Tournament, snapping the Ducks' two-game winning streak in the all-time series.
