EDGEWATER, N.J. (April 29, 2023) – The top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team defeated #2 FDU-Florham by a score of 5-0 to win the MAC Freedom Championship, at the Edgewater Tennis Center Saturday afternoon. The Ducks have now won three straight MAC Freedom Championships.
Junior Aashi Kulakarni was named the tournament MVP. Stevens remains perfect in MAC Freedom conference tournament games, as they have never lost since the team moved from the Empire 8 to the MAC Freedom during the 2019-2020 season. The team has now won 11 straight games.
Stevens again captured all three doubles flights to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Olof Persson and junior Aashi Kulakarni won their 11th straight match with an 8-2 win on line one over Joni Carasso and Tyler Crook. Sophomore Vivek Harinarayan and first-year Max-William Kanz topped Matthew Emery and Ronald Duval 8-2 on line two to also record their 11th straight win. Junior Andrew He and sophomore Troy Zhang completed the sweep with an 8-2 win on line three over Saini Karanveer and Brandon Schwartz.
Since the teams play first to five, the Ducks needed just two wins in singles play to advance. On line five, sophomore Matt Luzzi was able to lock in a victory over Karanveer by a score of 6-0, 6-1. First-year Timothy Lau earned the clinching point for the Ducks on the sixth line as he defeated Schwartz 6-0, 6-0. Stevens possessed leads in three of the other four singles matches that would be declared unfinished. On the second line, Harinarayan maintained a 6-3, 2-3 lead over Carasso. He held a lead over Duval 6-4, 2-1 on line three, and sophomore Kanz led Emery 6-2, 4-1 on the fourth line to wrap up the unfinished matches.
