Women’s Tennis Downs Wilkes and King’s to Kick Off Conference Play

Ducks defeat Wilkes and King's to begin MAC Freedom play

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 2, 2023) – Sophomore Isabella Dona, senior Juliette Marchisio and first-year Anusha Singh each won a pair of singles matches as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated both Wilkes University Sunday in a pair of MAC Freedom matches contested in the Keystone State.

Stevens began the day with an 8-1 victory over Wilkes before closing the day with a 9-0 triumph over King's. The two victories moved Stevens to 3-5 on the year and to 2-0 in league play. The Ducks have won nine straight regular season conference matches.

Tea Amerise had the lone victory of the match for Wilkes, who dropped to 1-4 on the year and to 0-1 in league play. After snapping the Colonels' historic run within the MAC Freedom, the Ducks have now won each of the last three meetings between the programs. King's, meanwhile, closed the 3-6 and 1-1 in league play. The Ducks' victory over King's snapped the Monarchs' three-match winning streak.

In the match with Wilkes, Stevens got on the board by sweeping the three doubles flights. Junior Polina Odintseva and graduate student Agatha Malinowski posted an 8-5 victory over Cassidy Greenman and Zoe Klein on line one, while the first-year tandem of Stephanie Untermeyer and Anya Sharma topped Amerise and Kaitlyn O'Neil 8-2 on line two. Dona paired with Marchisio to post an 8-2 win over Sydney Farmer and Karlee Yuscavage in the third position to cap the sweep.

Five of the Ducks' singles victories came in straight sets. Untermeyer and first-year Fionna Flores each posted 6-1, 6-0 victories on lines one and four, respectively. Amerise topped Odintseva 6-4, 6-3 at second singles, but Dona downed Klein in three sets on line three. Marchisio bested Farmer 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles and Singh scored an 8-5 victory over Yuscavage on line six to round out the victory.

Stevens then turned its attention to King's and came away with a shutout victory.

Sharma and Untermeyer moved into the first doubles position and came away with an 8-4 victory over the Monarchs' top team of Ashley Kenia and Hailey D'Amato. Sophomore Emma Eguia teamed with Flores at second doubles to defeat Jackie Costello and Braelyn Drollas via an 8-0 decision. First-year Aliona Heitz earned her first victory of the day, teaming with Singh, to earn an 8-4 win over Payton Lloyd and Emma Rooney at third doubles to send the teams into singles play with the Ducks holding a 3-0 lead.

The Ducks continued their strong play, winning all six singles flights in straight sets. Malinowski and Eguia dropped just one game each in winning their respective matches. Malinowski topped Kenia 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, with Eguia downing D'Amato 6-1, 6-0 on line two. Marchisio notched her second singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Drollas at fourth singles. Dona downed Costello 6-0, 6-4 at third singles, while Heitz had a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Rooney at sixth singles to round out the victory.
