HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 3, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers scored six goals and had one assist, while senior Julieann Murphy added five assists and a goal, as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated #5 Lycoming 21-4 after in the MAC Freedom semifinals Wednesday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Rogers once again led the Ducks (16-2) with six goals on the day as she recorded her 200th career goal at Stevens. Murphy totaled six points on the day, reaching the 100 point milestone in the game. Fifth-year Morgan Westerby was the second leading scorer with four. Senior Zoe Cook added a hat trick. Sophomore Emily Smart and first-year Stefanie Sellitto each tallied three points, as Smart had a goal and two assists while Sellitto had two goals and an assist. Senior Maddie Schmidt added two goals while junior Emily Leiby and sophomore Alison Lax each had a goal and an assist to round out the Duck contributions. The Ducks will now host the MAC Freedom Championship on Saturday, May 6, against either #2 Misericordia or #3 FDU-Florham.
Four different players for Lycoming scored in the contest. Their season ends with a 9-9 record and a 4-4 record in conference.
Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start between the pipes and earned her 16th win of the season. She made five saves in the game. First-year Felicity Heilferty played the fourth quarter for the Ducks.
It was all Stevens early on as the Ducks scored three times in the opening three minutes. Westerby struck less than a minute into the game. Westerby then scored her second goal of the game with 13:00 minutes to go. Rogers then scored 20 seconds later to push the Ducks' lead to three. Lycoming scored at the 10:58 mark to cut the deficit, but Rogers answered two and a half minutes later on the player advantage to restore the three goal lead. 38 seconds later, Rogers scored again, this time from a free-position attempt. She scored her fourth goal of the game less than a minute later. Zoe Cook rounded out the scoring down a player as the Ducks led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Stevens did not allow Lycoming to score in the second quarter as they themselves ran up the score. Westerby tallied her third of the game at the 14:28 mark and then added another from a free-position attempt just under three minutes later. Schmidt scored at the 9:41 mark as the Ducks reached the double-digit mark. Sellitto scored her first of the game at the 7:49 mark to make the score 11-1 to initiate the running clock. Zoe Cook, Murphy, and Lax each scored to round out the second quarter scoring as Stevens led 14-1 at the break.
Lycoming were the ones who came out of the half on the better foot. Katie Maguire scored at the 12:28 mark on the man-up advantage. Just over a minute later, Schmidt scored the Ducks' 15th goal of the game on an assist from Smart. The Warriors scored the next goal to get the lead back down to 12, but Stevens scored the final two goals of the frame as they led 17-3. Zoe Cook and Rogers rounded out the scoring in the quarter.
Leiby and Rogers scored in the first two and a half minutes as the Ducks extended their lead to 16. Smart then scored her only goal of the evening at the 8:41 mark as they hit the 20 goal mark. Sellitto then scored with 3:44 left with a player advantage. Lycoming scored in the final minute, but the Ducks would win the game and advance to the MAC Freedom Championship.
Stevens had 19 draw controls while Lycoming had eight. Leiby led the Ducks with eight and Sellitto had six. Zoe Cook, Rogers, Murphy, Sullivan, and first-year Eran Gleason all had one for Stevens.
The Ducks were successful on 11 of their 12 clear attempts. The Warriors also had ten successful clears in the same amount of attempts.
The Ducks caused seven of the 14 Lycoming turnovers. Leiby led the team with three. Zoe Cook, senior Colleen Shea and first-years Lauren Sullivan and Bella Mangano each had one. Lycoming caused two of the Ducks' seven turnovers.
The Ducks went two for four on free-position attempts, with Rogers and Westerby converted for the Ducks. The Warriors went one for four on free-position attempts.
