AMBLER, Pa. (May 7, 2023) – Sophomore Evan Pravato had one hit and one RBI while junior Frank Tonina had two hits as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to #1 Arcadia in game two of a best two-out-of-three series in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom Tournament by a score of 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.
Arcadia advances to the MAC Freedom Championship series after winning both games against the Ducks. The Knights finished 4-1 against Stevens this season. The Ducks finish the year 27-16 with a 14-10 record in conference play. Stevens has not made the Championship series since 2021.
Stevens tallied seven hits in the game. Along with Pravato and Tonina, seniors Michael Reyes and Chris Davis, junior Christian Kreiser, and sophomore Eli Somers each tallied one hit in the contest.
It was a pitchers duel to open up the game as senior Ryan Shea and Zach Steiger each were superb for their respective teams. No runs were scored in the first three innings.
The Knights were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Donchez hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Kevin Wheeler.
Stevens responded in the top of the fifth inning to tie things up at one. Davis led off the inning with a single. After sophomore Liam DeRubertis flew out to center, Pravto came through in the clutch and hit a double to left center that brought Davis all the way home from third.
Arcadia tallied two triples in what would be a two-run seventh for the Knights. With one out, Matthew Sot drilled a ball to center field which saw him get all the way to third. After a walk in the next at-bat, Alex Madera hit another triple to the same spot as both runners came home to score, putting the Knights up 3-1.
Stevens would be unable to bring home another run as Arcadia would hold on. The Ducks had two runners on base in the ninth.
Shea earned the start for the Ducks. He pitched a solid five innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out six batters. Senior Justin Doyle (5-6) took the loss in relief. He pitched one and a third innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Senior Anthony Pron also made an appearance, giving up just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Steiger pitched six innings for Arcadia. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out five. Nadell Booker (6-2) pitched two solid innings of relief, not allowing a run. Hunter Sibley (7) earned the save, allowing just one hit in the ninth.
