HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 16, 2023) - Senior Elaine Kooiker scored her first goal of the year as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team tied with the University of Scranton 1-1 in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks (0-3-2) remain winless to start the 2023 campaign. It is the worst start to a season since 2009, when Stevens lost their first eight games to begin the year. Scranton (2-2-2) started the season ranked inside the top 25 polls, but has struggled to open up the 2023 season. The tie ends a two game losing streak for the Ducks against the Royals.
Scranton got the better start of the two teams, generating a few chances in the first 20 minutes. Senior Dana Perry was forced to make a save in that span to keep the game tied at zero. After having zero chances prior to the 37th minute, Stevens jumped on the board as Kooier scored her first goal of the season to put the Ducks in front. Senior Claire Ganley threw in the ball from the right side and found the head of Kooiker, who headed the ball into the bottom left corner. Stevens would maintain their 1-0 lead at the half.
Scranton would get the equalizer they were looking for in the 63rd minute from Niamh Healy. She scored a volley with her right foot from inside the box to tie the game. Despite conceding the goal, the Ducks had four attempts to take the lead, including sophomore Angela Dinh firing a shot near the six yard box off of the crossbar. The other Stevens attempts were goal scoring opportunities, but were all hit directly down the middle to the keeper. The score would finish 1-1.
