Field Hockey Shuts Out Ramapo in Season Opener

This marks the third straight year the Ducks have won their opening game.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 2, 2023) - Graduate student Lynda Farinella and junior Makenna Quigley each scored as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Ramapo College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks (1-0) won their season opener for the third straight season. Stevens held Ramapo (0-1) to just two shots and recorded a shutout. The shutout is the second straight over the Roadrunners in as many meetings, as the Ducks won 1-0 back in 2019. Farinella was able to convert for Stevens in the first half, while Quigley put the finishing touches on the game late in the second.

On just their first shot on target in the game, Stevens was able to convert in close as Farinella smashed in a goal on an assist from sophomore Gabi Maroney in the 13th minute. Junior Emily Smart also had an attempt before the quarter came to a close, but her attempt was blocked. The second quarter was played mostly in the Ramapo defensive third. Farinella was awarded a penalty shot at the 27th minute but her attempt was stopped. It remained 1-0 Ducks at the break.

Stevens dominated most of the second half, with a lot of the play taking place in their offensive zone. Senior Dani Hessels forced an early save from the Ramapo goalie which kept it a one goal game. Quigley almost scored at the end of the third, her attempt was also saved. Quigley then put the game away in the final minutes of the game by scoring her first goal of the year as the Ducks came away victorious 2-0.
