HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 13, 2024) – Junior Jack Hershman had 15 kills and six digs in game one, while junior Koby Sherman put down seven kills and nine digs in game two. as No. 1 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball defeated St. Joseph's Long Island 3-1 (30-28, 27-25, 22-25, 25-20) and Kean (25-14, 25-12, 25-22)Saturday in a non-conference tri-match hosted by Stevens inside Canavan Arena.
Junior Sebastian Huyke had a monster game against St. Joe's, as he recorded career-highs in both assists (38) and kills (7), while also tallying six digs. Senior Carver Weirick also tallied 11 kills against the Golden Eagles. Graduate student Louden Moran guided the Ducks against Kean with 29 assists.
Stevens allowed St. Joe's to hit .215 in the match, but responded against Kean as the Cougars mustered up just a .019 hitting percentage. The Ducks were consistent on the day as they hit .282 against the Golden Eagles and .285 against the Cougars.
Dating back to last season, Stevens has won ten straight matches.
The Rundown (St. Joe's)
- Stevens jumped out to a 7-1 lead in set number one as it looked like they might run away with it. The Golden Eagles answered though, and were able to get back within one at 9-8. The Ducks rattled off the next five points, including two kills from Huyke. With the Ducks up 21-18, St. Joe's scored the next three to tie the set. The teams remained stalemated at 25 and continued to play on, with the Ducks being able to finally pull away to win 30-28.
- The second set was another close one that also saw Stevens jump out to an early lead, this time at 7-4. With the Ducks up 12-10, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead. Weirick then recorded a kill in part of a two-point run, but the Golden Eagles responded with three straight to take a 18-14 lead. Later down 19-15, Stevens scored four in a row, highlighted by a kill from Weirick, that tied things at 19. The two teams would end up finding themselves stalemated at 25, but the Ducks pulled away quickly this time, winning 27-25 after a kill from junior Jack Hershman and a St. Joe's attack error.
- Stevens led 11-8 to start the third set, with 10 of their 11 points coming off of kills. The Golden Eagles hung tough, as they were able to rattle off three-straight points midway through the set to take a 16-15 lead. Tied at 19, St. Joe's scored six of the final points to force a fourth set.
- The Ducks found themselves down 3-0 and 6-3 to start the fourth frame, but that did not discourage them as they scored the next seven points to take a 10-6 lead. Graduate student Percy Bickford had two kills on the run. Later up 16-12, graduate student Connor Feulner and Moran each tallied kills as the home side went up 19-12 after a 3-0 run. The Ducks' last three points came from errors as they took the fourth set 25-20 and won their first match of the day.
The Rundown (Kean)
- Despite being tied 8-8 after the first 16 points, the Ducks turned on the jets and raced to a first set victory. Stevens only allowed Kean to score six more points, while the Ducks scored 17 more to earn the win. Bickford tallied four kills in the set, while Feulner added three. Moran also tallied 11 assists in the frame.
- It was the Cougars who had the better start in the second set ast Kean led 7-6. Stevens followed that with four-straight points and never relinquished the lead the rest of the set. Kean tacked on a point to end the run, but the Ducks answered with four more, as junior Hunter Schmidt and sophomore Tyler Hoke each got kills. Stevens also had runs of five and four in the set as Stevens cruised to a 25-12 win.
- Looking for the sweep, the Ducks went down 2-0 but quickly responded with five points to take the lead. First-year Dominic Ambrose had a kill while the other four points came from Kean errors. The Cougars got within one before Stevens went on a five point run to open up a 14-8 lead. With the Ducks up 22-16, Kean went on a big run of their own as they cut the deficit to one. Stevens however stood tall, and scored three of the last four points to seal the sweep.

- Huyke finished the St. Joe's match with a hitting percentage of .462, going seven for 13 with one error.
- Junior Jesse Knuckles had 16 digs against St. Joe's while Bickford had 10 digs against Kean.
- Hoke led all Ducks with four blocks.
For the Opponents
- Mark Williams, Tyler Anderson, and Luke MacPherson each recorded a double-double for the Golden Eagles.
- Chris Mitchell had six kills and three digs for Kean.
