WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (January 13, 2024) - Sophomore Dorothy Loffredo recorded her third-career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while senior Anika Damera scored a career-high 14 points, as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated King's 78-61 in MAC Freedom play Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks (7-8, 2-2 MAC Freedom) get back into the win column and have won two of their last three games. Both victories came on the road and this game ends a three game road trip. Stevens has now won seven-straight games in the series. With the loss, King's fell to 3-12 and 0-4 in conference play, extending their losing streak to seven. Stevens scored four points in the first minute as junior Lucy Alberici and sophomore Leyla Castro each made a bucket to give the Ducks an early lead. Later up 10-7, Castro buried a triple that put the Ducks up six. First-year Kay Decker made a layup with 2:42 left in the first as the Ducks went up nine. Loffredo made a layup as time expired in the frame that put Stevens up 24-13. The Ducks scored the first five points of the second quarter that extended the teams run to eight. Damera got into the scoresheet as she made a bucket from long range that put Stevens up 18 with just over seven minutes to play. She would double her triple total by draining another one at the 4:08 mark. Loffredo made the only other Duck field goal in the frame as the visitors led 45-27 at the half.
Damera remained hot to kick off the second half as she made another three-pointer 42 seconds in to put Stevens up 21. Both teams struggled to score, as the next Duck basket didn't come till the 4:18 point via Alberici. Alberici and sophomore Olivia Schubiger each converted field goals to conclude the third as Stevens led 58-47 going into the fourth. King's went on a 10-0 run that spanned from 24 seconds in the third till 7:22 in the fourth as the Monarchs got within five. Stevens responded with six-straight points as Alberici made two free-throws, followed by buckets from Decker and Loffredo. After a King's basket, Damera scored five-straight, making a three and a layup, to put the Ducks back up 14.
