Women's Volleyball Completes Sweep With Five-Set Thriller Against Kean

Union, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team topped Grinnell College 3-1 before erasing a 2-0 deficit to knock off host Kean University 3-2 in a non-conference tri-match Friday evening.

The Ducks (19-6) knocked off Grinnell 25-19, 25-18, 24-26, and 28-26 before outlasting Kean 21-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, and 15-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind early in the opening frame against Grinnell, Stevens used two attack errors to go up 4-2. A 3-1 Grinnell spurt extended the gap to 12-10 before Molly Harris spearheaded a 4-0 spurt. She delivered an ace before Vivian Lisboa put down a set from the sophomore. The period featured ties at 12, 13, and 14 before Stevens registered four of five points, with Meg Dion adding three kills to go up 18-15. The Pioneers fought back to the set at 18, but Stevens reeled off six straight markers. Elle Maggio had two kills, and Bailey Axelrad had an ace before a service error from Grinnell ended set one.

Riding the momentum of the opening set, Stevens climbed out to a 3-0 lead but surrendered the next three. Cleo Shannon, Dion, and Harris netted kills during a 4-0 run, and an additional 4-0 spurt extended the lead to 16-8. The Pioneers closed to two at 18-16, but Dion registered consecutive kills to start a 6-1 rally. Dion punctuated the second set victory with another kill, giving Stevens a 2-0 edge in the match.

The Ducks went up 10-6 in the third as Maggio and Lisboa closed the run with kills. The lead swelled to double-figures after an 8-2 run, but Grinnell battled back with eight consecutive points before Ella Kraver ended the run. The team from Iowa answered back, tallying eight of the final 10 points to claim their first set of the match.

A 9-1 spurt by the Ducks in the fourth set opened up an 11-6 advantage, with Kraver and Dion slamming multiple kills during the rally. Maggio pinned down a set Harris set to extend the lead to 14-9 before the Pioneers countered with the next five to take a slim one-point lead. Maggio delivered an ace to put Stevens back up 19-17 and a Kraver kill made it 23-21. Grinnell responded with four of the next five, but Maggio and Lisboa netted kills to bring up match point. Grinnell answered the call with a kill, but a service error and a Shannon kill capped off the win for the Ducks.

Two Maggio kills and a service ace from Parker Adkins put Stevens up 5-2 in the opening period against Kean, but a 10-2 spurt by the hosts put them up 19-12. The Ducks closed to within three at 24-21 but could not get any closer as Kean claimed set one. Stevens fell behind by double digits in the second stanza and struggled to regain the form they had against Grinnell. An 11-3 run by the team turned a 12-point deficit to four after a Sarah Bolduc ace, but Kean answered with four of the next five to go up 2-0.

The Ducks dropped the first six points of the third stanza but fought back to tie the frame at eight after a Paulina Miller ace and a Kraver kill to polish off an 8-2 run. The Ducks scored eight of 10 points midway through the period, as Bolduc had three kills and Lisboa served up two aces to go up 17-11. Kean got to within four at 21-17, but the Ducks finished the frame with the last four points to whittle the deficit to 2-1.

The fourth set went back and forth early, with neither side going up by more than two before Stevens erupted for seven straight markers. Shannon had two kills, and Kraver netted a block and a kill during the game-changing run. The Cougars closed to within four at 22-18 after a 6-2 run, but a Dion kill and a Bolduc ace brought up set point. The hosts fought off one before Shannon leveled the match with a kill from Harris.

In the deciding fifth stanza, Kean went up 4-3 before Stevens tallied the next three points. Harris and Lisboa teamed up for a rejection, and Kraver served up an ace to give the Ducks the lead. Stevens delivered five straight points to extend the margin to five at 11-6. Stevens cemented the win and completed the comeback with four of the last five points, with two attack errors ending the match.
