Men's Fencing Returns To Competition At Coach Nikki Franke Classic

Philadelphia, Pa. – Junior Andrew Yurovchak of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team advanced to the Round of 16 in epee at the Coach Nikki Franke Classic on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Yurovchak led seven Ducks that qualified for the tableau in the epee weapon group. After receiving a bye, the junior knocked off teammate Riley Parker 15-12 in the Round of 64. Parker moved onto the Round of 64 with a 15-9 victory over Michael Kang of NYU. He advanced to the Round of 16 as he clipped Colin Yu of Boston College 15-14 before dropping a 15-4 battle to Ajit Sivakumar of NYU.

Nicholas Smith moved into the Round of 32 as he knocked off Vasil Ivakimov 15-9 in the opening round. Smith was upended 15-10 by Brayden Gyure of North Carolina 15-10. Noah Tumibay had a bye in the Round of 128 but was knocked off by Aidan Kumar of NYU in the Round 64, while Ethan Pena fell 15-12 to David Bailey of Sacred Heart University 15-12. Erik Marran and Yuval Fussman earned byes but lost in the Round of 64, as Fussman fell 15-6 to Gavin Hearne of Drexel, and Marran was knocked off 15-5 by Kozmo Rhyu of Duke University.


Dev Badlani, Alan Hu, Nick Reznick, Rocco Matthews, Graham Shambarger, Liam Thomas, Rishi Kandagadla, James Glover, and Aden Vishnevesky advanced to the bracket stage foil. Badlani dispatched Tucker Naccarella of Drexel 15-3 in the opening round before getting clipped 15-14 by Connor Williams of North Carolina in the second round. Hu took down Mitchell Bachman of Temple 15-5 before dropping a 15-7 decision to Dusan Zeljkovic of Penn State. Matthews topped Shambarger 15-8 matchup as Glover took down teammate Kandagadla 15-9. Thomas knocked off David Xing of Hunter 15-9 before falling to Yaroslav Muruhin of Penn State 15-1 in the Round of 64.


In the sabre weapon group, Cyrus Erachshaw and John Morreale moved into the Round of 32 with wins. Erachshaw picked up a 15-11 win over Caleb Brutus of Temple before falling 15-8 to Ryan Wong of Boston College. Morreale notched off Brandon Howe of NJIT 15-10 in the Round of 64 but was knocked off by Leonid Kotov of Johns Hopkins 15-11. Chinli Ong, Colin Mahoney, and Spencer Depew also advanced out of pool play.
