Men's Soccer Draws With King's; Locks Up No. 1 Seed

Hoboken, N.J. – Sophomore defender Luke Carey tied the game with 5:49 remaining in the second half to help the RV Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer draw with King's College (Pa.) 1-1 on Tuesday evening.

Omar Martinez collected an assist for Stevens (8-3-4, 5-0-1 MAC Freedom) as Kyle Carroll scored for King's (7-5-4, 2-2-2 MAC Freedom). With the draw, Stevens locked up the No. 1 seed in next week's MAC Freedom Conference Championship and will host a Semifinal matchup next Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens peppered the Monarchs with shots early, collecting five shots in the first 15:16. Ben Goldberg had the best chance as Ben VanValkenberg stopped his 15th-minute shot. Luca Campbell was denied in the 26th minute, as the Monarchs didn't notch their first shot until the 27th minute.

The hosts put a shot on frame in the 36th minute as the King's first-year keeper rejected Emerson Kekesi's try. Stevens nearly broke through in the 39th minute as Martinez received a long, clearing pass from goalkeeper Guillermo Castaneda-Chang. Martinez took a touch, and his flick was about to go into the goal, but then a sliding Monarch defender cleared it out. The two sides entered the break even at zero, as that was the final shot of the period.

Stevens outshot King's 8-2 in the first half and held a 4-1 advantage.

The Monarchs broke through for the game's first marker in the 53rd minute. Off a foul, Phillip Permyashkin sent in a free kick into the box, where Nate Horn headed the ball closer to goal. Carroll emerged from the scrum and poked the ball into the goal, making it 1-0 King's. Stevens hunted for the equalizing marker as Carey and Goldberg were stopped midway through the stanza.

As time ticked away, Ethan Hagen let a shot go from distance that just missed outside the post, keeping the score at 1-0. Castaneda-Chang preserved the one-goal deficit with a denial in the 78th minute, right after Campbell was turned away nearly a minute earlier. The Ducks found the back of the net in the 85th minute. Emerico Vespucci launched in a long throw, and the carom found Martinez. His shot was blocked, but the rebound popped out right to Carey, and the left-footer buried the try into the bottom of the net, leveling the match at one. Neither side had a shot on goal the rest of the way, and both teams earned a point.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Carey scored his second collegiate goal, with the first one coming against FDU-Florham.
  • Martinez's assist was the first of his career.
  • Stevens clinched their second regular season crown since joining the MAC Freedom, claiming the No. 1 seed in 2019.

  • "We keep things entertaining! It was a fun game against a very strong and spirited King's team. We had to dig deep, and again, it took a team effort to achieve the result. Looking forward to another great conference game on Saturday."
