Spellman Hits 1,000 Career Points, Goodall Drops Career-High 30 in 83-55 Men’s Basketball Win Over Scranton

Hoboken, N.J.  – Jack Spellman joined the 1,000-point club and Mike Goodall scored a career-high 30 points for the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team in an 83-55 win over the University of Scranton Saturday night from Canavan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Spellman opened the game with a block and layup in the first 30 seconds. After a series of turnovers on both ends, Kyle Maddison answered a Scranton (2-1) layup with a three-pointer, adding two free throws for a 7-4 Stevens lead.

Goodall answered a Scranton layups with back-to-back three-pointers 26 seconds apart, forcing a Royals' timeout. The Ducks' lead grew to 16-6 on a Spellman three-point play, but Scranton slowly worked its way back in with a 10-5 spurt in just under six minutes. Layups from Tommy Scholl and Goodall pushed the Stevens (2-1) lead up to nine, but a Royals' three and jumper in the paint sliced the lead back to just four.

After the teams traded baskets, with Stevens holding a 27-23 lead, Goodall book-ended a Maddison three with a pair of layups and Scholl added a three, capping a 10-0 run, drawing another Scranton timeout. Goodall pushed the halftime lead to 15 with another three in the final seconds. The Ducks led for the final 17:43 of the half.

With the score 42-30 less than two minutes into the second half, Goodall scored seven straight points via a layup, three-pointer, and two free throws. Maddison followed with back-to-back three-pointers, then a turnaround jumper, and Goodall added another three; in all, the two reeled off 18 straight points themselves in less than five-and-a-half minutes. Scranton finally ended the scoreless drought with a jumper, but Goodall knocked down another three for the new career high.

Sitting at 996 career points, Spellman moved a single point away following a three-point play at the 7:13 mark, putting Stevens in front 70-42. On the Ducks' next trip down the court, Spellman was fouled in the act of shooting, giving him two chances at the line. After missing on the first, Spellman hit nothing but net on the second, before exiting into a sea of joyous humanity from the Stevens bench.
