CHAMPS! Korczukowski Tallies Game-Winner As Field Hockey Claims MAC Freedom Championship

Glenside, Pa. – Sarah Korczukowski scored the game-winning goal with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Arcadia University in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship Game to punch their ticket to the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday.

The Ducks, who won their seventh conference title and second consecutive MAC Freedom crown, will find out their opponent on Sunday night. Defender Alisyn Fink was tabbed as the MAC Freedom Most Valuable Player after helping hold Arcadia to four shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens peppered the Knights early in the game, taking the first four shots of the game. Emily Smart was stopped by Anna Doblovosky in the fourth minute, while Taylor Brooks was denied in the seventh minute. The Knights were the ones who broke through first, converting on their first shot of the afternoon. With 28 seconds left in the opening quarter, Morganne Dee netted a goal off an assist from Mackenzie Clark.

Despite trailing, the Ducks continued to outshoot the Knights in the second stanza. Sophia Cozza was stopped in the 17th minute, while Smart was once turned away in the 21st minute. The Ducks finally found the equalizing marker in the 24th minute. Off a corner, Makenna Quigley inserted into Lauren Flynn outside the circle. Flynn moved around a defender and fired a shot that Cozza knocked in.

The two sides entered halftime tied at one, but Stevens controlled the contest over the first 30 minutes. They held a commanding 14-1 advantage in shots while attempting all 11 penalty corners at the half.

Stevens and Arcadia combined for just two shots in the third period, as Lily Wierzbicki turned away a try from Clark in the 39th minute. In the fourth quarter, Stevens poured it on, firing 10 shots and taking seven penalty corners. Wierzbicki preserved the 1-1 stalemate with a stop on Dee in the 55th minute before Stevens took their first lead of the afternoon. Smart inserted a penalty corner to Korczukowski, and the senior fired past Doblovsky, giving Stevens a 2-1 lead. The Ducks prevented Arcadia from recording a shot the rest of the way, sealing the win.
