Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Alberici, Castro Key Wire-To-Wire Win for Women's Basketball

Backcourt duo combined for 41 points

Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team never trailed as they snapped a three-game losing skid with a 76-52 triumph over Fitchburg State University on Sunday.

The Ducks (4-5) were paced by a game-high 21 from Leyla Castro, while Fitchburg (3-10) were led by 17 from Stephanie Hart.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides traded the first eight points of the contest before Dorothy Loffredo snapped a 4-4 tie with a layup. The layup sparked an 11-2 spurt for Stevens over nearly four minutes, with Castro tallying six points and Lucy Alberici and Olivia Schubiger converting baskets. Stevens limited Fitchburg to one field goal over the final 3:33 of the opening frame and grabbed a 26-11 edge after one, with Katherine Bogutsky converting the last four points for the Ducks.

Stevens continued to control the contest, pushing the gap to 19 1:30 into the second stanza on consecutive layups by Loffredo. A 7-0 run from the Falcons whittled the margin to 12 as Stevens was held scoreless for over four minutes. Alberici halted the run with a jumper in the paint, with the Ducks closing out the first half with nine of the final 12 markers.

The Ducks defense clamped down in the second period, limiting the Falcons to 3-of-15 shooting from the floor.

Isabella Duval knocked down a three-pointer 4:31 into the third to stretch the margin to 20 before a Castro trey kickstarted a 9-0 run. Duval drained a second three during the run, and Stevens took a 19-point edge into the fourth. A Hart layup got Fitchburg within 16 early in the fourth, but the Falcons could not get any closer. The Ducks limited FSU to two points over the last 4:45, cementing their victory.
