No. 2 Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 13 NYU in the Patrick Dorywalski Classic

Bickford and Sherman combined for 25 kills.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 14, 2024) – Graduate student Percy Bickford produced 14 kills while junior Koby Sherman dropped 11 as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball beat No. 13 New York University (NYU) 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) Wednesday night in the Patrick Dorywalski Classic.

Graduate student Louden Moran totaled 34 assists and added six kills. He also tallied six digs in the contest.

Stevens allowed NYU to hit just .150 in the match, including holding the Violets to hitting percentage of zero in the second set. The Ducks hit .341, including a .387 percentage in the third set.

Stevens sees their winning streak rise to 11-straight games with the victory. The Ducks improved to 23-14 over NYU. The Violets fall to 4-4 this season.

The Rundown

  • The two teams played the first set close the whole way, including splitting the first 14 points. Four different Ducks recorded kills in the early going. After the Ducks went up 13-11 off of a kill from sophomore Tyler Hoke, NYU scored three-straight points to retake the lead. Picking back up with the Violets up 20-19, Sherman recorded back-to-back kills to push the Ducks into the lead. Bickford would send home the final kill as the Ducks won the first 25-22.
  • Tied 2-2 at the early in the second frame, Stevens went on a 5-0 run to take a five-point lead. Sherman and Bickford each had two kills on the run. The Ducks would score six of the next nine points as they extended their lead. With the Ducks up 14-9, Moran and Bickford tallied back-to-back kills to increase the Ducks' lead. NYU would get back to within four as Stevens led 18-14, but Stevens scored the next five, with graduate student Connor Feulner tallying two kills and Bickford adding another. Moran would end the frame with a kill on an assist from Feulner as the Ducks led 2-0.
  • NYU got out to a 2-0 lead as they looked to avoid the sweep. Stevens responded with the next two, but the Violets came back with four more as they led 6-2. Down 8-5, Stevens went on a 4-0 run, as Bickford had two kills while Moran tacked on another. Junior Kevin Herbst also added an ace. Stevens would maintain the lead until NYU tied things up at 16. The home side then scored four of the next five to go up 20-17 and force the Violets to call timeout. The Ducks were able to close things out, as they recorded yet another sweep.

  • Bickford finished the match with a hitting percentage of .522 on 23 attacks. He also had four digs.
  • Hoke recorded a team-high four blocks.
  • Moran and graduate student Nathan Lancia each had six kills.
  • Junior Jesse Knuckles had a team-high nine digs and added five assists.
  • Lancia, Feulner, and Herbst each recorded an ace.

  • Buddy Cohen led the team with seven blocks.
  • Devyn Nguyen picked up 26 aces.

  • No. 2 Men's Volleyball returns home on Saturday as they host No. 19 Benedictine and Bard for a tri-match. The team will be raising their 2023 National Championship banner, as well as getting their Championship rings, before the match.
