No. 17/17 Women's Lacrosse Comes Back to Defeat Mary Washington Saturday Afternoon

Leiby scored five goals to propel the Ducks to victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 24, 2024) - Senior Emily Leiby scored five goals as the No. 17/17 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team took down Mary Washington 9-8 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks start the year 2-0 for the third-straight season. Stevens is now 2-0 all-time against Mary Washington, with the other win coming last season. The Ducks led for just 5:33 in the game. Mary Washington drops to 1-2.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game less than a minute in to take a 1-0 lead. The visitors would then double their advantage with 5:25 remaining in the first. At the 2:54 mark, graduate student Zoe Cook scored her first goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Junior Anna Velardi assisted on the play. The Ducks would trail 2-1 after one. In the second quarter, Mary Washington built on their lead by scoring goals at both the 8:24 and 6:19 marks as they took a 4-1 lead. They would add another a minute later to go up four. The Ducks scored their lone goal in the second with under two minutes to go, as Leiby scored on an assist from junior Rebecca Guerra. Mary Washington led 5-2 at the break.

The Ducks offense woke up in the second half as Leiby scored a free-position goal just 39 seconds into the half. With 8:14 to go, sophomore Maddie Hogan scored with a player advantage as the Ducks got to within one. Mary Washington scored their sixth a few minutes later, but the Ducks got another before the end of the frame via Leiby on an assist from junior Emily Smart. The Eagles led 6-5 after three. To kick off the scoring in the fourth, Mary Washington converted a free-position attempt with the player advantage to go back up two. 30 seconds later, Leiby and Smart connected again with a player down. Stevens tied the game with 9:40 remaining via a free-position goal from Velardi. Cook would then give the Ducks their first lead of the game with just over five minutes remaining, also on a free-position shot. Leiby would score a minute later on an assist from Smart to give the Ducks a bit of a cushion down the stretch. The Eagles would be able to get one back late, but the Ducks would hold on to secure another home victory.
