Whiteside Scores a Career-High Six Times As No. 17/16 Men's Lacrosse Defeats SUNY Maritime 20-8

The Ducks improve to 2-1.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 28, 2024) - Senior Mikey Whiteside scored a career-high six goals as the No. 17/16 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated SUNY Maritime 20-8 in a non-conference contest Wednesday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks win their second-straight game as they improve to 2-1. All three games played have been at home for the Ducks. The next two games will be at home as well. Stevens is now 9-0 all-time against the Privateers. Each game has been won by at least eight goals, with eight coming by double-figures. Maritime falls to 2-1.

Just over a minute and a half into the game, senior Jack Savarese opened the scoring for the Ducks as he scored an unassisted goal. A few minutes later, Whiteside tallied his first of the game unassisted as the Ducks doubled their advantage. With 8:17 reading on the DeBaun scoreboard, sophomore Matthew Pergola joined in on the scoring to make it 3-0. Maritime would answer a few seconds later, but Stevens took a 4-1 lead into the second as Whiteside found the back of the net again. Whiteside then made it a hat trick 32 seconds into the second quarter. Seven seconds later, Savarese tallied his second of the game on an assist from sophomore Will Giarusso as the Ducks went up 6-1. The Privateers would score the next goal, but Whiteside struck again with 9:40 to go in the half to go back up five. After another Privateers goal, Stevens scored the final four of the second to take a 11-3 advantage into the break. Senior Joseph Grippo scored twice, while Pergola and junior Shea Grant each added one.

The Maritime halftime talk worked, as the Privateers scored three of the four goals in the third and held Stevens scoreless for the first 14 minutes of the quarter. Junior Tommy Robertozzi scored with 48 seconds left that gave Stevens a 12-6 lead heading into the fourth. After the visitors scored the first of the fourth to get back within five, Whiteside tallied number five with 12:32 remaining. Maritime would score next, but that would be their last tally of the game. Graduate student Dominick Visintin scored his first of the game at the 10:07 mark. With 8:49 left and with the man advantage, Whiteside recorded number six as he ripped a shot just under the crossbar and finished it off with the celebration as the Ducks went up 15-8. Grippo added his third a few minutes later. In the final 3:08 of game time, the Ducks added four more goals, as sophomore Daniel Garvey, junior Jake Connelly, junior Larson Cronk, and junior Blake Creamer each scored their first of the season.
