Baseball Blows Past Rutgers-Newark 15-0 on Friday

The Ducks improve to a perfect 5-0.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 1, 2024) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored a season-high 15 runs and hit three home runs on the day, as they beat Rutgers-Newark 15-0 Friday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field.

Sophomore William Sotiropoulos (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in a six-inning effort. He struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing just one hit and no runs. Sophomore Jonah Swarts (1) picked up his first-career save. He pitched three innings and allowed just one base runner. He struck out five batters.

Junior Eli Somers, graduate student Michael Reyes, and first-year Garret Wolf each homered for Stevens.

The Ducks open up the season 5-0 for the first time since 2021. The Ducks are now 3-0 at home. 

With the win, Stevens improves to 8-3 all-time against the Scarlet Raiders, winning five-straight against them. Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-2 with the loss..

The Rundown

  • Somers kicked off the day with a home run in the first inning that gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead.
  • Stevens added three runs in the bottom of the second. Senior Frank Tonina reached on a single to kick start the inning, with senior Jack Stafford getting on behind him due to an error. In the next at bat, junior Zachary Boykin laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. After another out, graduate student Ben Tobio doubled to right center scoring both runs. Somers then singled up the middle to score Tobio, putting the Ducks up 4-0.
  • The Ducks exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Senior Christian Kreiser had a two-RBI double in the inning. Reyes would later a three-run bomb to go up 9-0. Boykin also added a RBI in the inning.
  • Wolf recorded his first career home run in the inning on the first pitch he saw, sending it to right center, scoring first-year Luke Mahala on the play as well. The Ducks led 13-0. Tobio would draw a bases loaded walk later in the inning that gave Stevens another run. They would make it 15-0 after Somers singled to left, scoring Boykin.

  • Tobio, Somers, and Reyes each had three RBI.
  • Somers had a team-high four hits, falling just a triple short of the cycle.
  • Somers, Tobio, Tonina, and senior Jack Stafford each scored two runs.
  • Wolf's first career hit was a home run. He totalled two for the game.
  • Senior Kieran O'Brien recorded his first career hit in the game.
  • Stevens allowed just three base runners, including none from the third to the seventh inning.

For the Opponents

  • Vince Taylor (0-2) took the loss, allowing 11 runs in four innings.
  • Robert Gonzalez and Devin Rojas each had one hit.
