COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 12, 2024) - Graduate student Zoe Cook and sophomore Maddie Hogan each scored five goals, with Hogan's tally being a career-high, as the No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Colorado College 14-11 in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon.
The Ducks start the year 6-0 for the third-straight season. The victory was the second road win of the year for Stevens and the first outside the state of New Jersey. Stevens has been great in close games this season, winning five of their six games by three goals or less. The Ducks are now 1-1 all-time against the Tigers. Colorado College drops to 2-3 with the loss.
Stevens scored less than two minutes in as sophomore Maddie Hogan found the back of the net to put the Ducks up 1-0. Just over two minutes later, graduate student Zoe Cook scored from a free-position to double their lead. After the Tigers tacked on a goal, Zoe Cook scored her second 43 seconds later with a player-advantage. The Tigers would score another with 2:33 left in the first, as Stevens led 3-2 after one. Zoe Cook would make it a hat trick less than a minute into the second, doubling the Ducks advantage. She would add her fourth with 10:53 remaining. Later with the score 5-3, Hogan scored her second of the day as Stevens went up three. The Tigers would score the next two, getting back to within one, but Hogan scored her third with 53 seconds left in the half. The Tigers added one more with 15 seconds on the clock, which gave the Ducks a 7-6 lead at the break.
Just over a minute into the second, sophomore Rebecca Guerra recorded her first goal of the game as the Ducks went back up by two. Despite the Tigers scoring next, Hogan scored the next two, one of which coming from a free position, as the Ducks led 10-7. The Tigers would just not go away though, as they made it 10-8 a few minutes later. It looked like the final nine minutes of the third would be scoreless, but sophomore Stefanie Sellitto found the back of the net with 11 seconds left on an assist from senior Emily Leiby. Steves led 11-8 after three. Leiby would be the one to score the next goal for the visitors, as she took it herself with 12:30 left. Colorado College would score two of the next three, with the middle goal coming off of the stick of junior Emily Smart. Stevens led 13-10 with 8:40 to go. The Tigers would then get within two with just under five minutes remaining. Trying to put the game out of reach, Zoe Cook scored her fifth on a player advantage free-position goal with 55 seconds remaining as the Ducks sealed the road victory.
