Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan in Non-Conference Match

Kanz and He post singles wins but Ducks fall to Battling Bishops

EDGEWATER, N.J. (March 22, 2024) – Senior Andew He and sophomore Max-William Kanz each earned singles victories, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team fell to No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan University 7-2 Friday in a non-conference match at the Edgewater Tennis Center.

With the setback, the Ducks dropped to 1-4 this season, although each of the four defeats were to nationally-ranked opponents.

Nationally-ranked Diego Segovia (#46) and John Falke (#37) each had singles victories for the Battling Bishops, who won their seventh straight in improving to 10-4. North Carolina Wesleyan's victory snapped Stevens' three-match winning streak in the all-time series, which the Ducks still lead 3-1. The Friday afternoon tilt was believed to be the first between the programs that didn't take place at the Mary Washington Invitational and was the first between the teams since 2017.

North Carolina Wesleyan began the match by winning all three doubles flights. Segovia paired with Albert Sitwell to post an 8-6 win on line one over junior Olof Persson and first-year Tristan Wroe. Falke paired with Logan Stoltz to top junior Vivek Harinarayan and senior Aashi Kulakarni 8-4 on line two. In the tightest of the three doubles matches, Kanz and first-year Samvid Andhare dropped a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) decision to 23rd-ranked Sean Keane and Andy Fanzaga.

When the competition switched to singles play, He earned a straight-set victory over Stoltz 6-3, 6-3 on line three, while Kanz rallied to top Fanzaga 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. However, the Battling Bishops closed out the victory by winning the other four singles matches to cement the final 7-2 score, although two of the four required a tiebreaking third set.
