Softball Homers Three Times in Doubleheader Sweep of King's

Prescott and Quattrochi hit the first of their careers, while Subbiondo added the other.

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 22, 2024) – Junior Rachael Prescott and first-year Emma Quattrochi each picked up their first career home runs, while sophomore Ella Tozduman earned her first win of the season in game two,  as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated King's 9-4 in game one and 7-1 in game two Friday night in a MAC Freedom doubleheader at Weehawken Waterfront Park.

Sophomore Kyra Fischer (6-4) earned the victory in game one. She pitched the whole game and gave up 11 hits and four runs but struck out a career-high seven batters.

Tozduman (1-0) picked up her first win of the year. She allowed just seven hits and one run, which was not earned, and struck out three batters. She pitched all seven innings.

The Ducks (10-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) picked up their first conference victories of the season. The Ducks have also won three of their last four. Stevens improves to 7-3 all-time against the Monarchs. King's falls to 8-6 and 0-2 in MAC Freedom play.

The Rundown (Game 1)

  • To start the game for Stevens, senior Jessica Guerrero was hit by a pitch. Graduate student Elise Fauske then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Guerrero to second. After junior Madison Subbiondo walked, Prescott delivered a two-run to right field to score both runners as the Ducks took the early lead.
  • Subbiondo singled to kick things off in the bottom of the fourth and then stole second with ease. With Prescott at the plate, the junior swung and blasted a ball that hit the padding on the fence in center and then bounced over the fence to give herself her first career home run. The Ducks led 4-0.
  • With one out and Fauske and junior Emma Ruiz walking earlier in the inning, it was Subbiondo's turn to blast a ball, as she drilled a three-run shot to right center to put Stevens up 7-0. The Ducks had a chance to win the game in five innings, but were called out on the plate, forcing a sixth inning.
  • Out of almost nowhere, King's awoke and struck for four runs in the sixth. The stranded two base runners in the inning as well.
  • Needing some insurance, Quattrochi turned on the fourth pitch she saw in the first at-bat of the bottom of the sixth, as she sent the ball to left field for her first career home run. Subbiondo would pick up an RBI double later in the inning as the Ducks went up 9-4. They would secure the victory in the seventh.

The Rundown (Game 2)

  • Looking to rebound, the Monarchs scored one run in the top of the first inning thanks to two Duck errors.
  • Stevens used a big third inning to help propel them to victory. Quattrochi singled and stole second to start things off for the Ducks. Guerrero followed with a double that pushed Quattrochi to third. Fauske then laid down a bunt and made it to first to load the bases. In the next at-bat, Ruiz grounded into a fielder's choice, as each runner advanced but Quattrochi was out at home. Subbiondo then delivered a single to center to score one, followed by a bases-loaded walk from Prescott, to put Stevens up 2-1. Senior Carolyn Yahn pinch hit in the inning and delivered a two-run double to put the Ducks ahead 4-1.
  • With one out in the fifth, Prescott doubled and was pinch run for by first-year Jay Morales. Yahn would then ground into a fielder's choice, but no outs would be recorded as Morales beat out the throw at third. First-year Maria Dante would later pinch hit in the inning, and she grounded out but brought home Morales on the play as the score read 5-1.
  • Quattrochi was again involved in the sixth as she singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Guerrero would immediately bring her home in the next at-bat as she singled and reached second on the throw. With Fauske up next, she reached third as Fauske hit a sacrifice bunt. Ruiz then singled to bring home Guerrero as the Ducks gained two insurance runs. That would be all they needed as they won 7-1.
