HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 23, 2024) - Sophomore Matthew Pergola scored three goals and had one assist, but it wasn't enough as the No. 15/15 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell to No. 3/3 Tufts 20-7 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks' (7-2) winning streak will end at seven games as they drop their first match since their season opener. Stevens is now 4-2 in Hoboken this year. Both losses have come against top 5 teams. Stevens is now 0-12 all-time against the Jumbos. Tufts improves to 5-1.
Tufts scored twice just a minute into the game to take an early 2-0 lead. The Jumbos would add another at the 10:59 mark to go up three. The Ducks crawled back into the game before the end of the quarter as they struck twice. With 8:55 to go, senior Jack Savarese scored on a feed from junior Mikey Whiteside. Sophomore Matthew Pergola tallied his first goal with senior Keegan Hughes assisting with just under five minutes to go. Tufts led 3-2 after one. The second quarter would be mostly dominated by Tufts, as the Jumbos scored eight in the frame. Senior Joseph Grippo scored the lone Stevens goal in the quarter at the 7:10 mark, as Pergola found him for the goal. Tufts was up 8-3 at the break.
The Jumbos held the Ducks scoreless for the first half of the third quarter, while also adding two goals in the process. Grippo finally broke the drought with an unassisted tally with 5:27 remaining. Tufts would score five of the final six goals in the quarter, with the lone Stevens goal in the final five of the frame coming from Pergola. Graduate student Chris Kirschner assisted. The Jumbos would score five unanswered to start the fourth as their lead ballooned to 20-5. Stevens got one back with 4:18 to go, as Savarese earned his 25th of the year on an assist from junior Tommy Robertozzi. First-year Tyler Holland wrapped up the scoring in the game with his first career goal.
