HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 30, 2024) – Junior Zachary Boyken had three hits, four RBI, and scored twice as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team lost to Delaware Valley 5-4 (F/7) in game one, but won 13-0 (F/7) in game two in a MAC Freedom doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Junior Matt Villapiano (2-1) took the loss in game one. He pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits. He also walked two batters. Graduate student Leo Bristow started the game, as he pitched four innings. He gave up four runs and six hits.
First-year David Finch (1-1) picked up the win in game two. He pitched five innings and gave up just three hits while striking out four.
The Ducks (14-7) take two of three over the Aggies across the weekend. Stevens is 2-2 across their last four, with a ranked matchup up next on the schedule.
With the split, Stevens is 10-3 all-time against the Aggies. Delaware Valley is now 9-11 and 2-5 in MAC Freedom play.
The Rundown (Game 1)
- Delaware Valley scored twice in the first inning.
- The Aggies added two more in the second as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
- Needing runs, senior Frank Tonina doubled to kick off the bottom of the fifth. After an out, senior Christian Kreiser and first-year Chip Krese tacked on back-to-back walks to load the bases. Graduate student Ben Tobio grounded into a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, with every runner advancing while Tonina was out at the plate. Junior Eli Somers then delivered a single to left to bring home Kreiser and Krese as the deficit got trimmed in half. Boykin would then double to clear the bases, but he got thrown out trying to make it a triple. This tied the game at four.
- Delaware Valley scored once in the seventh as they secured the victory.
The Rundown (Game 2)
- Stevens jumped all over the Aggies in the first inning. Tobio doubled to start the game, while Somers followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Boykin would pick up an RBI for Stevens, as he singled next to score Tobio. Graduate student Michael Reyes singled in the next at-bat to load the bases. This allowed first-year Garret Wolf to pick up a two-RBI single in the next at-bat. Kreiser then walked to reload the bases. After an out, senior Kieran O'Brien reached on a fielder's choice, while Reyes scored on an error. Stevens added one more after Krese delivered a sacrifice fly.
- Tobio and Somers picked up back-to-back walks to start the fourth for Stevens. Boykin then reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. After Reyes was hit by a pitch, Wolf reached on a fielder's choice, with Tobio scoring on an error. First-year Tyler Wilke then hit a single to right center to score two Ducks as the lead grew to nine.
- Reyes picked up two RBI in the sixth, while Kreiser and Boykin added one, as the Ducks were on cruise control, taking a 13-0 lead. That result would hold through the seventh.
