WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 30, 2024) – Senior Jessica Guerrero tallied four hits and scored a run, but it wasn't enough as Stevens Institute of Technology softball team lost to Manhattanville 2-0 in game one and 5-3 in game two Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Weehawken Waterfront park.
It was a Strikeout Cancer day for the Ducks. Jose Guerrero, the father of Jessica, threw out a ceremonial first pitch. Jose is a survivor of stage four Gastric Lymphoma.
Sophomore Kyra Fischer (7-7) lost game one. She pitched six and a third innings and allowed two runs on five hits. She also walked one batter.
Sophomore Ashley Allen (3-3) would then take the loss in game two. She pitched two and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs and three hits. All four runs were unearned. Sophomore Ella Tozduman started the game and pitched four and a third innings. She allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two batters.
The Ducks (11-11) have lost three games in a row and five of their last six. The Ducks also fell to 6-4 in home games this year. Stevens is now 1-7 all-time against the Valiants. Manhattanville improves to 5-7 with the wins.
The Rundown (Game 1)
- Stevens had runners on second and third in the bottom of the third but were unable to cash in.
- Manhattanville took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth.
- The Valiants tacked on another run in the top of the seventh.
- Stevens had runners in scoring position just the one time in the game, as they were unable to score any runs.
The Rundown (Game 2)
- After no runs across for either team in the first three innings, the Ducks struck for two in the bottom of the fourth. Guerrero and first-year Maria Dante walked to start the inning, and then both proceeded to steal a base in the next at-bat. Junior Rachael Prescott batted home Guerrero and advanced Dante in her at-bat, while junior Madison Subbiondo brought home Dante to put Stevens up 2-0.
- Errors and a home run plagued the Ducks in the sixth, as Manhattanville brought five runs across home plate.
- In the bottom half of the sixth, junior Megan Curtis singled and then advanced to second in the next at-bat. Junior Emma Ruiz pinch hit for Stevens next and singled to left, advancing to second on the play. Curtis moved to third. Graduate student Elise Fauske then delivered a single to left for Stevens to score Curtis, but she got thrown out at second. The Ducks trailed 5-3.
- The Valiants would hold on in the seventh as they earned the doubleheader sweep.
Top Performers
- Subbiondo, Prescott, and Fauske each had one RBI.
- Curtis had two hits. She also added a run scored.
- Dante was walked twice and scored a run.
For the Opponents
- Charli Shinstine (2-5) picked up the win in game one. She pitched the whole game and struck out nine. She also gave up five hits.
- Emily Mottoshiski (1-2) won game two. She pitched the whole game, allowing three runs on six hits.
- Juliana Parkes had two hits and two RBI.
- Sydni Brooks hit a two-run home run in game two.
- All seven runs were scored by a different player.
