Baseball Falls Just Short in 4-3 Loss to No. 3 Baldwin Wallace

The Ducks left the bases stranded in the top of the ninth.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 8, 2024) – First-year Chip Krese totaled two RBI while junior Zachary Boykin added one, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell just short against No. 3 Baldwin Wallace 4-3 Friday afternoon at Florida Coast Spring Training.

First-year David Finch (0-1) lost his first career game in the outing. He pitched 3.2 innings of relief and allowed one earned run on five hits. He also struck out four batters. Graduate student Marc DeCicco started the game for the Ducks, lasting just one inning. He gave up two runs but allowed no hits. He walked two batters.

The Ducks (6-1) have now lost their first game of the season heading into their first MAC Freedom games tomorrow. The loss ends a six-game winning streak. The Ducks went 3-2 in Florida last season after losing their first two games.

With the loss, Stevens falls to 0-1 all-time against the Yellow Jackets. Baldwin Wallace improves to 6-2 with the win.

The Rundown

  • With one out in the second, graduate student Michael Reyes and senior Frank Tonina hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Later with two outs, Boykin singled to right field, scoring Reyes on the play. Krese then picked up a two-RBI single to center as the Ducks went up 3-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead.
  • After the second inning, the Ducks totaled two hits through the eighth inning. Baldwin Wallace had just two as well, as the score remained 4-3 heading into the ninth inning.
  • Needing just one run to tie the game, Reyes and Tonina again produced back-to-back singles as the Ducks put a run in scoring position with no outs. Senior Jack Stafford was then hit by a pitch, which would load the bases for Stevens. With the tying run at third, Stevens struck out three-straight times as they left the bases stranded.
