HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 9, 2024) - Sophomore Matt Pergola scored five goals and added two assists, while graduate student Chris Kirschner scored six times, as the No. 17/16 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated Oneonta 22-7 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks win their fourth-straight game as they improve to 4-1. All five games played have been at home. Stevens improves to 3-0 all-time against Oneonta, with all three matchups coming in the past three years. Oneonta is now 3-2.
Graduate student Chris Kirschner kicked off the scoring less than a minute into the game as he put the Ducks up 1-0. The Red Dragons then tied the game at the 11:55 mark. Stevens would go on to score the next three goals, as senior Keegan Hughes, Kirschner, and junior Tommy Robertozzi each put one in the back of the net for the Ducks, putting them up 4-1. Oneonta would score the next goal and then the two teams would alternate the rest of the way. Pergola scored his first of the day 3:50 on the clock, while Robertozzi notched his second with over a minute and a half left, as the Ducks took a 6-4 lead into the second quarter. To start the second, Oneonta scored to get back within one. At the 13:58 mark, Pergola tabbed his second of the day to put Stevens up two. That kickstarted a 5-0 run across eight minutes for the Ducks as they went up 11-5. Pergola would add another on the run, while senior Joseph Grippo scored twice and Kirschner scored another. Oneonta would score with a man-advantage with 4:23 on the clock, but the Ducks secured the final three goals of the quarter to take a 14-6 lead into the break.
The Ducks continued to pile it on as they outscored the Red Dragons seven to one in the third, as well as scoring the first six. Kirschner and senior Jack Savarese combined for the first four with two apiece, while Pergola and Grippo capped off the 6-0 run. Savarese would record his third quarter hat trick on the man advantage with 3:31 to go in the frame as the Ducks led 21-7 after three. Pergola would add another goal in the fourth, which would ultimately end up being the final goal of the game, as the Ducks cruised to victory.
