HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 13, 2024) - Graduate student Brendan Laundry scored three goals, while junior Mikey Whiteside and senior Jack Savarese each tallied three points, as the No. 14/13 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated FDU-Florham 25-2 in a MAC Freedom contest Saturday afternoon.
Stevens scored 15 goals in the first quarter, which is believed to be the most in a quarter for the program since at least the beginning of this century. The Ducks (11-2, 3-0 MAC Freedom) have now won four-straight games. Stevens has never lost a MAC Freedom game, as they extended their conference winning streak to 42 (Empire 8 and MAC Freedom). Stevens put 28 past the Devils last season. The Ducks are now 8-0 all-time against FDU-Florham. The Devils fell to 1-11 and 0-3 in MAC Freedom play with the loss.
"Great game by our guys today," head coach Gene Peluso said. "I loved the fact that we were able to play every healthy player. It was great to have so many guys on the score sheet as well. We recognized 3 players with game balls; Luke Lesizza, Connor Moore, and Jackson Blanks."
Stevens scored quickly on the Devils, as first-year Jackson Penn took the opening faceoff and finished just 8 seconds in. The Ducks quickly doubled their lead, as Savarese scored on an assist from senior Keegan Hughes. Just under 12 minutes in the quarter, graduate student Dominick Visintin found the back of the net on an assist from junior Bryan Creamer. Visintin turned provider on the next Stevens attack, as he set up graduate student Sam DiChristina for the goal. FDU-Florham was forced to call a timeout after sophomore Matthew Pergola put Stevens up 5-0. After two minutes of no goals following the timeout, senior Joseph Grippo and Bran Creamer scored two quick goals to put the Ducks up seven. Junior Tommy Robertozzi, sophomore Joe Leone, Whiteside, Grippo, junior Connor Gabilanes, Savarese, Pergola, and first-year Matthew Kirschner tallied a goal before the end of the quarter, as the Ducks led 15-0. The Ducks would then score twice in the first four minutes of the second quarter, as Whiteside scored a man down while Laundry added the other, as the team went up 17-0. Later with 5:22 to go in the quarter, first-year Tyler Holland got on the score sheet with the man advantage to put the Ducks up 18. Stevens would add two more via junior Jake Connelly and sophomore Luke Lesizza to take a 20-0 halftime lead.
"Great job by our defense in the first half," Peluso added. "We recognized Patrick Peluso, (Lesizza), Cooper Foote and Reece Molinaro with their play today on that end of the field. We also recognized Brendan Laundry with a game ball on his first start as a Duck and scoring three goals. There was three first-time starters for Stevens today (Peluso, Laundry and Visintin)."
Laundry tallied his second of the game just a minute into the second quarter as the Ducks continued to put on the pressure. Just over a minute later, Holland tallied his second with Connelly assisting on the play. The Ducks started to possess the ball more, as sophomore Miles du Bois scored the only other Duck goal in the frame. Stevens led 23-0 after three. FDU-Florham finally got on the scoreboard at the 11:51 mark in the fourth quarter, as they scored a man down. The Devils doubled their tally over four minutes later, as the score then read 23-2. Stevens would finally be able to find the back of the net in the fourth, as Laundry scored his third of the game with 5:05 left. First-year Jackson Blanks scored his first career goal to wrap things up, as the Ducks cruised to victory.
"It was great to get another conference win and now we prepare for a very well coached DeSales team!" Peluso finished.
