Baseball Wins Marathon Over Mount Saint Vincent

The two teams combined for 23 runs, with the game lasting over three hours.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 16, 2024) – First-years Tyler Wilke and Garret Wolf, along with graduate student Michael Reyes, each picked up three RBI, as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team beat Mount Saint Vincent 15-8 Tuesday night.

First-year David Finch (2-1) earned the win in relief. He pitched two and a third innings and did not allow a hit. He struck out three batters. Sophomore Jonah Swarts started the game for the Ducks. He pitched two and two-thirds innings and gave up one run on three hits. The run was unearned. Stevens used eight pitchers in the game.

With the win, Stevens improved to 19-10 and the team is now on a three-game winning streak. The Ducks also ended a two-game losing streak in non-conference play. In home games this year, Stevens improved to an impressive 9-2.

The Ducks improved to 3-0 all-time against Mount Saint Vincent. The Dolphins came into the game on a three-game winning streak, but the team fell to 10-14 with the loss.

The Rundown

  • Stevens jumped on the Dolphins as they scored three runs in the first. Graduate student Ben Tobio hit a ground-rule double to leadoff the game, and then advanced to third during the next at-bat on a wild pitch. After a junior Eli Somers walked, senior Christian Kreiser swung on the first pitch he saw and delivered an RBI single for the Ducks. Tobio scored on the play and Somers moved to second. Later with the two base runners on second and third, Wilke recorded his first career triple which scored both base runners.
  • The Ducks more than tripled their advantage in the second. With two outs and nobody on, Tobio singled to third and then stole second, which was followed by a walk by Somers. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch. The bases would then be loaded as Kreiser was hit by a pitch. Reyes was also hit by a pitch in the following at-bat, which forced Tobio home. The next Stevens batter was Wolf, who hit a fly ball to center. The Dolphins center fielder lost the ball in the air, as it dropped behind him, which gave Wolf a three-run double. The next Stevens batter would be Wilke, and he picked up another RBI as he crushed one that hit the right field fence. Stevens led 8-0 after two.
  • Mount Saint Vincent scored one run in the top of the third.
  • After a few scoreless innings, Stevens was able to get seven runs in the sixth. Reyes, junior Colby Ching, junior Liam DeRubertis, first-year Chip Krese, and sophomore Dylan Fishbough each had RBI in the inning. The Ducks led 15-1.
  • The Dolphins scored four runs in the seventh and added three more in the ninth, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
