WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 20, 2024) – First-year Emma Quattrochi had two hits and a run scored, as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team lost to FDU-Florham 6-4 in game one and 3-0 in game two Saturday afternoon in a MAC Freedom doubleheader.
It was senior day for the Ducks, as they honored graduate student Elise Fauske, and seniors Jessica Guerrero and Carolyn Yahn.
Sophomore Kyra Fischer (8-10) took the loss in game one. She pitched all seven innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits. She also conceded two home runs. Fischer struck out three in the outing.
Sophomore Ella Tozduman (3-3) earned the loss in game two. She pitched the whole game and gave up three runs on six hits. Only one of the runs was earned. She struck out two batters.
The Ducks (14-16, 5-7 MAC Freedom) dropped two crucial games in the race for the four seed in the MAC Freedom tournament. The Ducks now do not have the head-to-head tiebreaker with FDU-Florham (15-13, 4-5 MAC Freedom), nor do they currently own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Delaware Valley. FDU-Florham still has three games in hand, and what they do in those three games will determine what the Ducks need to do on Saturday versus Misericordia to make the playoffs. FDU-Florham and Delaware Valley will meet for a doubleheader next Saturday.
The Rundown (Game 1)
- The Devils started game one out strong as they scored once in the top of the first.
- FDU-Florham added three more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead.
- The Ducks countered in the bottom half of the third to tie things up. Stevens loaded the bases with three walks, as first-years Elizabeth Kirstein and Quattrochi, along with Guerrero, each got a free base. In the next at-bat, junior Rachael Prescott reached on a fielder's choice, which brought home a run for the Ducks. With two outs in the inning and the bases reloaded, Yahn singled to bring the Ducks to within two. Fischer would then reach on a fielding error in the next at-bat, which drove home a run. In the same play, FDU-Florham made another error, this time throwing, as another run came home to tie the game.
- Neither team would add another run through the sixth inning.
- With two outs in the top of the seventh, FDU-Florham hit a two-run homer that sealed the victory.
The Rundown (Game 2)
- Stevens stranded a runner on third in the first inning.
- FDU-Florham hit their third homer of the day in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Devils added one more in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
- Stevens loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to bring home a run, as the Devils earned a big MAC Freedom sweep.
