DALLAS, Pa. (April 27, 2024) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team produced just two runs on eight hits across two games as they were swept by No. 16/21 Misericordia 7-1 (F/7) in game one and 2-1 in game two Saturday afternoon in a MAC Freedom doubleheader.
Graduate student Leo Bristow (4-4) took the loss in game one. He pitched three innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Four other pitchers saw action in the game.
First-year David Finch (2-2) lost game two. He pitched six innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out five batters. Junior Matt Villapiano pitched two innings of relief, giving up just two hits.
The Ducks (22-14, 12-9 MAC Freedom) wrap up conference play with two losses. Stevens ends the year with two straight conference series losses. Despite getting swept today, the Ducks are heading to the MAC Freedom playoffs and will be the #3 seed in the tournament. They will head to Pennsylvania to take on #2 Arcadia. Misericordia will be the #1 seed as they finished conference play 19-2. They currently have a record of 22-14.
The Rundown (Game 1)
- Stevens struck first as they carried their momentum from Friday into Saturday. After graduate student Ben Tobio walked and stole second, senior Christian Kreiser hit an RBI single to put the Ducks in front.
- The Cougars scored three in the first and one in the second to go up 4-1.
- The Cougars added another in the bottom of the fourth as they led 5-1.
- Misericordia scored two more in the sixth, while the Ducks did not threaten the rest of the game, as they secured the victory.
The Rundown (Game 2)
- Once again, Stevens scored in the top of the first inning, this time via error.
- Misericordia answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
- Stevens had runners on first and third in the third but could not score. The Cougars then took the lead in the bottom of the third.
- Misericordia continued to shut down Stevens, not letting them get a runner in scoring position the rest of the way, as they earned the sweep.
Top Performers
- Tobio had two hits and scored both runs.
- Kreiser had two hits and an RBI.
- Tobio stole two bases.
- Stevens had four errors in game one.
For the Opponents
- Steve Rinda (5-1) earned the win in game one. He pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up just one run on four hits. He struck out six.
- Connor Maryniak (8-2) picked up the win in game two. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. Matt Lanzendorfer (3) earned the save, pitching two scoreless innings while striking out three.
- Garrett McIlhenney scored five runs, had three hits, and one RBI.
- Joe Comins had three hits, an RBI, and scored a run.
