MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (May 10, 2023) – Senior Polina Odintseva and first-year Lorena Piegas each picked up two victories as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated Eastern Nazarene 5-0 Friday morning in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match was played on the campus of Wesleyan.
For the second-straight season, the Ducks win their first round matchup in the NCAA tournament by a score of 5-0. They defeated Husson in the first round last season. The Ducks remain hot, having won their last 11 matches. Stevens will now face the hosts No. 4 Wesleyan in the second round. Stevens is 0-1 against ranked opponents this season.
It was smooth sailing for the Ducks at doubles as they took all three matches handedly. First-year and MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year Alix Dry linked with sophomore Stephanie Untermeyer on the first line for an 8-1 victory. The Ducks also claimed 8-1 victories on the other two lines to put themselves up comfortably 3-0.
Singles went just as easy for Stevens as they quickly took two to win 5-0. Piegas finished first on line six, taking down her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Odintseva then followed Piegas with her own 6-0, 6-0 sweep to seal the match. Stevens led in each of the other four singles matches when play finished.
