No. 15 Men's Lacrosse Defeated by No. 6 Christopher Newport 12-5 in Third Round of NCAA Tournament

Stevens finishes the season 18-3.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (May 12, 2024) – Three Ducks recorded a goal and an assist as the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team lost to No. 6 Christopher Newport 12-5 Sunday evening in a third round NCAA matchup at the Jennings Family Stadium.

With the loss, the Ducks finish the year 18-3. Stevens went 10-2 in games played in Hoboken, 5-1 in road games, and a perfect 3-0 in neutral site games. The 18 wins this year matches the program record for wins in a season. The loss is the first since May 23 for Stevens. Christopher Newport improves to 16-5 with the victory and will face RIT in the quarterfinals next weekend.

Alex Brendes and Andrew Cook each scored three times and provided two assists for the Captains in the victory. The Captains are now 1-1 all-time versus Stevens as they avenged their 2019 loss to the Ducks.

Graduate student Kevin Holtby stopped 16 in defeat. He recorded ten or more saves in five of the last six games to end the year. Zac Hanway only made nine saves for Christopher Newport in the win.

The Rundown

  • The Captains jumped out to a 3-0 advantage to open the game. All three came at even-strength.
  • Stevens got on the board via graduate student Chris Kirschner at the 6:11 mark of the frame on a man-up opportunity. Senior Jack Savarese, who set the program record for goals in last night's game, turned provider as he recorded an assist on the goal.
  • Each team snagged another before the horn blew as the Captains led 4-2 after one.
  • Stevens would tie up the game early in the second as graduate student Dominick Visintin and senior Joseph Grippo each found the back of the net as the score read 4-4 with 12:38 left on the clock.
  • Christopher Newport scored the final two goals of the half as they maintained a 6-4 lead at the half.
  • The Captains pulled away in the third quarter as they outscored the Ducks 4-0 to take a commanding six-goal lead heading into the fourth.
  • Stevens would end up going over 42 minutes scoreless in the game spanning from the second quarter to the fourth. They finally ended the drought with 19 seconds remaining in the game on a goal from senior Keegan Hughes. Christopher Newport had already added two goals in the frame as they secured the 12-5 victory.

Top Performers

  • Savarese, Grippo, and Visintin each scored once and provided an assist.
  • Hughes and Chris Kirschner each added a goal, while junior Tommy Robertozzi added an assist.
  • Penn also led the Ducks with eight wins in the faceoff circle. Senior 
  • Sophomore Will Giarusso picked up five ground balls while junior Bryan Creamer recorded four.
  • Giarusso went 7-13 in the faceoff circle. Senior Conner Park went 1-3 and first-year Jackson Penn went 0-4.
  • The Ducks caused just six of the 12 Christopher Newport turnovers. Bryan Creamer and first-year Luke Cifuentes each had two.

For the Opponents

  • Christopher Newport outshot Stevens 49-26 and 29-14 in shots on goal.
  • The Captains went 15-17 on clears compared to just 12-18 for Stevens.
  • The home side caused 15 of the 18 Duck turnovers.
