Women's Volleyball Takes Down Keene State in Straight Sets

Springfield, Mass. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team used a well-balanced offense to knock Keene State College in Friday's opening match of the Joel B. Dearing '79 Classic.

Three Ducks (1-0) tallied five kills or more as the team served up 16 service aces against the Owls (0-1). Stevens won the match 25-17, 25-18, and 25-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls took an 11-7 advantage in the opening set before a kill from Elle Maggio, and an ace from Liz Patterson trimmed the deficit to 11-9. A Patterson kill snapped a 15-all tie before the Owls answered back with a kill of their own. Stevens closed out the stanza in a big way, claiming nine of the final 10 markers. Maggio and Vivian Lisboa teamed up for two consecutive blocks before Meg Dion and Maggio ended the period with a rejection.

Five of the first eight tallies went in Stevens's favor during set two, including three consecutive service aces from Ella Kraver. The lead grew to seven on a kill from Gabbi Roberts before three straight points from KSC made it 15-12. Keene got as close as 21-17, but the Ducks reeled off the final three points, capped off with an ace from Molly Harris to take the 2-0 lead.

The Owls grabbed an 11-9 lead on the heels of a 7-1 spurt early in the third period before Bailey Axelrad registered eight consecutive points to swing the momentum toward Stevens. Axelrad delivered five straight aces to give Stevens a 19-12 lead. The Owls were able to fend off three match points before Lisboa pinned down a set from Harris to conclude the match.
