Women's Volleyball Outlasts No. 19 Ithaca, RV Springfield in Five Sets

Springfield, Mass. – The RV Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team outlasted No. 19 Ithaca College and RV Springfield College in five sets to complete a 3-0 weekend at the Joel B. Dearing '79 Classic.

The Ducks (3-0) topped Ithaca 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 14-25, and 15-12 before knocking off the host Pride 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 17-25, and 15-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Against Ithaca, the opening frame went back and forth, with the Bombers grabbing a slim three-point lead at 11-8. The two sides traded 3-0 spurts before Stevens crept in front 18-17 after a 5-2 run. Four out of five points, including two kills from Ella Kraver, pushed Stevens back up 23-22, but the Bombers reeled off the last three points to go up 1-0.

Stevens registered seven of the opening 10 points in set two and went up 14-8 after a double-block from Vivian Lisboa and Cleo Shannon. Sarah Bolduc and Kraver went back-to-back with kills and consecutive kills from Lisboa, and Meg Dion opened up a 20-15 advantage late in the frame. Once again, Ithaca fought back, drawing to within one at 21-20. Shannon stopped the run, and a block from Dion and Shannon brought up the set point. Ithaca fended off three set points to level things at 24, but Bolduc put away a Molly Harris set, and an attack error evened the match at one.

The Ducks stormed out of the gate, picking up the first eight markers of the third set. Kraver put down two kills during the rally as Ithaca committed four hitting errors. A 7-2 run by the Bombers trimmed the gap to two at 15-13 before a Kraver service error shrunk the margin to one at 18-17. Shannon kick-started a run with a kill before teaming up with Lisboa on a block. Lisboa gave the Ducks the set victory after notching a kill off a Harris set.

Ithaca responded with 18 of the first 25 points in the fourth frame, keeping Stevens at bay. The Ducks could get as close as eight, as Ithaca was able to force the deciding set. The Ducks trailed 4-1 early in the fifth but rallied behind a kill from Shannon, a block from Dion and Shannon, and a Dion kill to tie things at four.

The period featured ties at 4, 5, 7, and 8 before a 4-1 Duck spurt, capped off by a double rejection from Harris and Lisboa, made it 11-9. An attack error by Ithaca brought up match point, but the Bombers fought back with two straight points. Dion polished off the victory, putting down a nice set from Harris.

The Pride went up 12-7 in the opening period before Stevens tallied seven of the next eight, as two consecutive attack errors lurched Stevens in front. The hosts regained the lead with three straight, but a Paulina Miller service ace once again put Stevens up. Dion's kill made it 24-21, but Springfield used a solo block and kill to trim the deficit to one. Bolduc finished the opening frame with a kill, as Gabbi Roberts had the assist.

Stevens fell behind 12-4 in the second set but took the lead at 18-17 after a 5-1 run. Kraver and Dion drove the run with consecutive solo blocks. The newcomer Kraver delivered back-to-back service aces before Bolduc smashed a kill to push Stevens up 23-20. The Pride responded with the final five markers, leveling the match at one.

Three consecutive attack errors from Springfield gave Stevens a slim 10-9 advantage in the third stanza. A big 9-2 run, with two kills from Shannon, extended the Stevens lead to 19-14. Springfield fought back, tying the period at 22 thanks to three consecutive points. Needing three points, Parker Adkins delivered three kills over four points as the Ducks went 2-1 in the match.

Springfield controlled the fourth period, taking a double-digit lead at 19-8. The Ducks closed to six after a 6-1 run, but a Natalie Billet kill tied the match at two, forcing the deciding fifth frame. Stevens struggled early, falling behind 6-2, with the run capped off by two aces.

Five consecutive points turned things around for the visitors, as the frame was knotted at 7, 8, and 9. Atkins and Dion gave Stevens the advantage for good with two kills, and the Ducks clinched the victory on a missed serve from the Pride.
