Women's Soccer Clipped By Nazareth, 1-0

Rochester, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team was clipped by Nazareth College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Newcomer Maddie Nau earned her first start as a Duck and was tested early, making her first save of the game in the fifth minute. The Golden Eagles broke through in the 13th minute, as Shannon Sgombick notched an unassisted tally. Stevens had their first shot on frame in the 16th minute, with Sophia Murphy getting stopped by Annika Monfort.

The Ducks continued to hunt for the equalizing tally, with Lauren Alley seeing her shot denied midway through the stanza. The hosts seemed poised to double their advantage with 1:02 left in the opening period as they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. They were unable to convert, as the try was off-target.

Despite trailing after one, the Ducks outshot Nazareth 7-6, with Nau making a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes.

Monfort stood up to the Stevens barrage of chances in the second half, turning away shots by Murphy and Sarah Wnorowski early in the half. Stevens controlled possession in the second half, limiting Nazareth to just two shots. Nau made her second stop of the afternoon in the 80th minute as Monfort continued to deny Stevens.

Wnorowski nearly equalized in the 74th minute, but her shot ricocheted off the post. The visitors had one last chance as Alley was stopped in the 83rd minute. Stevens could not put another shot on target the rest of the way and fell 1-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Murphy and Alley registered two shots each, as Wronowski and Olivia Castro had shots on target.
• Nau turned away a pair of Nazareth shots in the setback.
• Monfort powered Nazareth with six saves, with Sgombick leading the way with three shots.

FROM THE FIELD
"Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in soccer. We are getting so close. We have hit the inside of the post and got in a number of good areas but it wasn't to be. I am very happy with the performance, and we just have to be patient and keep our heads up. We will get to work again next week, clean up a few things and be ready for Potsdam and NYU." – Head Coach Stuart Dick.

UP NEXT
The Ducks host the 20th installment of the Engineering Cup next weekend. They will face SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at 11 am, while NYU and Husson will meet at 2 pm.
