Men's Cross Country Takes Fourth At Osprey Open

Galloway, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's cross country team took fourth at the Osprey Open on Saturday morning.

The Ducks tallied 140 team points during the 8K event and were the third-highest Division III school in the field, trailing Moravian (34 points) and TCNJ (85 points).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Graduate student Liam Concannon was the top finisher for Stevens, crossing the finish line in ninth place. Concannon turned in a time of 25:24.3, with the top nine places determined by a mere 21 seconds. Classmate Jake Alymer took 28th as he finished in 26:39.36. Juniors Caleb Stephen (34th – 26:53.86) and Mick Barbi (35th – 26:55.2) went back-to-back, with graduate student Bryan Onody rounding out the scorers with a 41st place time of 27:05.82.

Senior Jake Porco was 55th in 27:27.2, with sophomore Ryan Paradine clocking in 27:31.52, which was good for 58th. First-year Enrico Parrella took 76th in 28:00.74, while graduate student Frank Orlando was behind him in 28:11.48. Stevens also had four runners in the Open Run part of the event, with Cillian Griffin (28:32.28), Kevin Medrow (28:54.2), Matt Hodorowski (29:53.89), and Luke Giangrande (31:51.03) running.

INSIDE THE MEET
  • The Ducks competed in the 8K for the time this season after opening the season with a 4K at Vassar two weeks ago.
  • Stephen, Barbi, and Onody tallied personal-best times in the 8K.
  • Concannon missed a PR by .3 seconds, falling just shy of his 8K mark set at the Rowan Interregional Border Battle on October 14, 2023.
  • Parrella made his 8K debut after competing in the 4K at Vassar on August 30.
FROM THE COURSE (Head Coach John Kolibab)
  • "This weekend was our first big test of the year, as it was the first time we raced our Championship distance (8 kilometers for men, and 6 kilometers for women).  It was also the first time that 11 of our athletes raced at these distances. Our groups stuck to the plan and executed their races plans very well.  We could not be happier with the team's performances, and while there is much room for our teams to grow, an opener this strong is tremendously encouraging."
  • "We are very happy with how our men's team performed today.  Liam Concannon is looking as strong as ever, finishing 9th in an incredibly talented field.  Liam running this well early on is very encouraging, and if this keeps up, there won't be too many runners that will be able to hang with him.  We also saw 8 kilometer lifetime bests from our 3rd, 4th, and 5th placing runners, which is not something you ever expect from a September opener.  I think what we're most happy about is the effort.  The cleanest races never happen early in the year, but our athletes attacked the course and came out the other side with some awesome results.  This is the most excited I've ever been about a cross country group after a first meet.  They're capable of some incredible achievements this year."
UP NEXT
The Ducks head to Messiah on September 28 for the Messiah Invitational beginning at 11:15 am. The Messiah course will also serve as the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship site in early November.
