Women's Soccer Knocks Off Montclair State, 1-0

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team held off Montclair State University 1-0 in the battle of Route 3 on Tuesday evening.

Graduate student Elsa Bley converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute, and graduate student goalkeeper Madelyn Nau made six saves for Stevens (2-4). Shannon Mullins led all players with seven shots for Montclair (1-3-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Olivia Castro had the first shot in the game, rifling a shot high in the seventh minute that goalkeeper Salange Bell snared. The Red Hawks had their first attempt as a diving Nau stopped Mullins. The two sides jostled for possession for most of the opening half, as neither side registered a shot during a 17-minute stretch.

The Ducks were awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. Gab Aloe drew the call as she sent a cross from inside the box that glanced off the arm of a Red Hawk defender. The referee pointed to the spot, and Bley stepped up for the kick. Bley went to the left and put her attempt just past Bell, who got her fingertips on it but wasn't able to prevent the goal.

The Red Hawks hunted for the equalizer, taking the final seven shots in the half. Nau made two saves to send the game into the half with Stevens up 1-0. Kylie Prendergast had a shot trickle just wide of the left post in the 36th minute, and Nau's final stop of the frame in the 44th minute closed out the period.

The Stevens defense held Montclair to one shot over the first 15 minutes of the second stanza, but Montclair ratcheted the pressure up. Aileen Cahill had a chance in the 62nd minute when Nau punched off the crossbar, and the rebound went over the bar. Mullins had another golden chance from distance, but the try rang off the crossbar, and Stevens cleared it away. The Red Hawks had one final scoring opportunity in the 85th minute. Off a free kick, Cahill found herself clear of the Stevens defense. She looked towards the goal, but Bley flew out of nowhere to redirect the shot out of bounds for a corner.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Nau's six saves were a season high, surpassing her previous best of two set in each of her first two starts this season.
• Bley's goal was the ninth of her career and the first since scoring twice in the regular season finale against Lebanon Valley last year.
• The win over Montclair was their first since 2018, when they topped the Red Hawks 2-1 in Hoboken.

FROM THE FIELD
"Montclair is a really good team. Very athletic, press well, great on the dribble. We rode our luck at times today, but the team really battled to get the win. We've been on the end of a couple of those games this season so it was nice to come out on the other side for a change! I'm really proud of the whole team." – Head Coach Stuart Dick.
