Women's Volleyball Takes Down Wentworth, Montclair State

Hoboken, N.J. – Graduate student Parker Adkins notched a pair of double-doubles as the Ducks took down Wentworth Institute of Technology in four sets and Montclair State University in five on Friday night.

The Ducks (8-1) topped Wentworth 25-22, 25-12, 25-27, and 25-16 before topping Montclair 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 25-13, and 15-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening frame against Wentworth, the two sides were deadlocked early before seven of eight points went in favor of the Leopards. Stevens continued to trail, falling behind 15-10. A kill from Elle Maggio and a solo rejection from Meg Dion trimmed the deficit to 15-12. After a side-out, Dion and Molly Harris combined for seven points, with Parker Adkins putting down three kills to push Stevens in front for the first time. The guests got the score tied at 22, but Dion notched three consecutive kills to polish off set one, including a kill on an overpass on set point.

The Ducks controlled the second set, racing out to a 12-3 lead behind strong serving from Bailey Axelrad, Dion, and Harris. Adkins registered three kills during the run, with Vivian Lisboa, Cleo Shannon, and Dion tacking on kills. The Leopards got within nine, but a kill on a second ball from Harris and an ace from the setter stretched the lead to double figures. Lisboa and Dion pinned sets from Harris to close out set two and give Stevens the 2-0 advantage.

Stevens fell behind early in the third, but the period ended up tied at 5,6,7, and 8 before three straight markers from Wentworth inched them in front. The Ducks used a 4-1 run to tie the frame at 15 and went up 18-17 on a Shannon kill. Once again, the stanza was level at 18, 19, and 20, but WIT went up three on two unforced errors. The home side reeled off four the next five, with an attack error bringing up set point at 25-24. The Ducks couldn't capitalize, as the Leopards totaled the last three points to cut the margin in half.

The hosts raced out to a 13-4 advantage in the fourth stanza, with Adkins pounding down three kills. Consecutive service aces brought it to 13-7, but Stevens sent the score back to double digits with a Dion kill. The Leopards fended off two set points, but Maggio gave the Ducks the victory with a kill.

The Ducks doubled up Montclair 6-3 early before the Red Hawks reeled off four straight points to take a 7-6 lead. A 3-0 spurt by Stevens gave the Ducks the lead for good, as Adkins, Harris, and Dion notched kills. The Red Hawks closed within three but could not get any closer as Maggio put away set point off a Harris set.

Montclair raced out to an 8-3 advantage in the second stanza, but consecutive kills from Dion and Adkins made it 13-10. The Ducks made it interesting, using a 6-2 run to get to 24-20. An attack error gave Montclair the 25-20 win, tying the match at one. The back-and-forth third period saw ties at 5,6,7,9,10, and 13 before three straight points put Montclair up three. Stevens fought back with ties 17, 18, and 19, but the Red Hawks tallied the final seven points to go up 2-1.

A 9-1 run by the Ducks gave them a 17-9 lead in the fourth set, with Lisboa being the catalyst with four kills. The Red Hawks countered with three straight markers before an ace from Harris and a kill from Maggio made it 20-12. Dion pinned down a set from Harris to clinch the fourth set and tying the match two.

Montclair recorded the first three points of the final frame before Stevens tallied the next four. The visitors went up in front 8-7 before the two sides were even at 8,9,10, and 11. Adkins slammed down two kills, and a double-block from Dion and Adkins brought up match point. The guests fought off one before Dion closed down the victory with a kill.
