Women's Volleyball Tripped Up By William Smith, 3-1

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team closed out the Stevens Quad with a 3-1 setback to William Smith on Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks (9-2) fell 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, and 25-12 to William Smith (9-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening period, with Vivian Lisboa putting down three kills. A 7-2 run from the Herons tied the set at eight before the two sides traded three-point spurts. William Smith took their first lead at 15-13, but Stevens answered with four straight markers, including three consecutive kills from Lisboa. The Ducks notched a 6-2 rally to take a 23-18 advantage, with Ella Kraver and Meg Dion combining for a block. The Herons got within two, but Dion pinned down a set from Molly Harris to claim set one.

An attack from William Smith put the hosts up 7-5, but the guests answered with six of the next eight markers to go up 11-9. After Parker Adkins notched a kill to get within one at 14-13, the Herons went on an 8-3 run to extend the gap to six. A Dion kill made it 23-18, but the Herons answered with the last two points to level the match one.

The visitors doubled up the Ducks 8-4 in the third period, but Stevens closed to 9-7 on a kill from Lisboa. A 5-1 run by the guests stretched the gap to six, and a kill extended the lead to eight. The Ducks got within five, but William Smith took the last two points to go up 2-1 in the match. 

Kraver served up an ace to tie the fourth stanza at four, and the teams exchanged 3-0 runs to tie the frame at seven. William Smith reeled off nine consecutive points, breaking the fourth set open. The Herons pushed the lead to double figures and ended the match with four of the final five markers.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Lisboa led the Ducks with 14 kills, as Ella Kraver had eight.
Bailey Axelrad led the defense with 19 digs, as Adkins and Kraver had 11.
• Harris handed out 28 assists while picking up eight digs.

UP NEXT
The Ducks open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play on Wednesday as they host Misericordia University at 7 pm inside Canavan Arena.
