Women's Soccer Downs York (Pa.), 2-0

York, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team put together a remarkable defensive performance and used a pair of late first-half goals en route to a 2-0 win over York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides struggled to break through the opposition's backlines through the first half-hour, with the teams taking just five shots, none on goal, between them.

In 40th minute, junior Sarah Wnorowski took possession just inside the midfield line for Stevens (3-4-2) and dribbled all the way into the 18-yard box, maneuvering around several York defenders along the way. Her right-footed blast was deflected away by keeper Joss Metz, but first-year Alina Friz was positioned perfectly for the deflection, tapping home the rebound from just outside the goal line, breaking the scoring drought with her second score of the season.

Just over a minute after Friz's goal, off a corner kick that was deflected to the far side of the field, a cross from senior Abby Harris found the head of sophomore Kaitlyn Pettit about 12 yards in front of goal. Pettit re-directed the ball inside the six-yard-box where first-year Sophia Murphy put one home past a diving Metz, doubling the Ducks' lead.

The second half played out much like the early part of the first, as the teams combined for just three shots (two on target) and two corners, with both defenses quick to smother nearly every scoring threat. Junior goalkeeper Kenny Donley snagged York's (5-2-3) lone on-target attempt of the match just past the midway point of the half.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Stevens handed York just its third home loss in its last 11 matches dating back to last season.
  • York's two shots matched the fewest conceded by Stevens in a match this season; the Ducks also conceded two against Potsdam on September 7.
  • With the win, all three of Stevens' victories, and 10 out of its last 12 dating back to the start of last season, have come via shutout.
  • Friz and Murphy each scored their second goals of the season, tying them with Lauren Alley and Nicole Angelini for the team lead.
  • Donley recorded her first shutout since September 30 last year against FDU-Florham.
FROM THE FIELD
"We seem to be hitting our stride at the right time. Today was a really strong performance against a solid York side who have had some very good results. It was really nice to see two first years making a big impact. Our players off the bench changed the game for us at the end of the first half." – Head Coach Stuart Dick.

UP NEXT
Stevens returns home to the DeBaun Athletic Complex for its final regular season non-conference match Wednesday, October 2 at 7 pm against the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
